When our good friend Francelli visited Playa Sonrisa, she couldn’t stop raving about this off-the-grid Caribbean gem. Located in Quintana Roo’s remote Xcalak National Marine Park, Playa Sonrisa offers an eco-conscious, clothing-optional retreat unlike anything else in Mexico.

Francelli highlighted the breathtaking activities available, from snorkeling and kayaking to diving at the world’s second-largest coral reef. The resort’s dive school made it easy for her to explore the vibrant underwater world, where she swam alongside manatees, turtles, and stingrays. "Everything feels better when you’re naked," she shared, summing up the resort’s liberating vibe.

The accommodations were another standout feature. Francelli stayed in a beachfront bungalow, complete with stunning ocean views and the soothing sound of waves to fall asleep to. She loved how the resort runs entirely on solar power and rainwater, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability. Though Wi-Fi is available, she found it easy to unplug and embrace the resort’s peaceful rhythm.

Dining at Playa Sonrisa also left a lasting impression. Francelli praised the fresh, delicious meals and loved the communal dining setup, where guests could connect over shared tables. The signature Tiki Teal Punch, crafted by the owner Blaney, quickly became her favorite.

Despite its remote location—about five hours south of Cancun or three hours from Tulum—Playa Sonrisa’s serene atmosphere made the journey worthwhile. The resort’s tranquil, motor-free environment offered a stark contrast to busier destinations like Zipolite.

For those seeking an intimate, eco-friendly escape with the freedom to enjoy life without tan lines, Playa Sonrisa is a must-visit. Francelli described it as "a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation," and we couldn’t agree more.

Getting There

Playa Sonrisa is part of the "Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Xcalak" (Reefs of Xcalak National Marine Park) and lies about 230 miles south of Cancun. It's a world apart from the bustling tourist spots, offering peace and solitude in the Costa Maya region, near the small fishing village of Xcalak. This secluded paradise is about 8 km north of the channel separating Mexico from Ambergris Caye, Belize.

By Car:
If you're flying in, the best points of arrival are Cancun or Tulum. From Cancun, it's approximately a 5-hour drive, and from Tulum, about 2.5 hours. Renting a car is recommended as it provides the flexibility to explore the region at your leisure. Drive south from Cancun or Tulum on Highway 307 towards Chetumal, passing through Playa del Carmen and the quieter stretches beyond Tulum.

After passing Felipe Carrillo Puerto, consider taking the "cuota" (toll road) bypass to avoid town traffic. Continue south, and shortly after Limones, take the well-marked turn east towards Mahahual and Xcalak. Follow this road until you see the turn for Xcalak to the right, 3 kilometers before the coast. From there, it's a straightforward drive south to Xcalak, then a left turn at the soccer field towards the ocean, and north along the beach road to Playa Sonrisa.

Tip: If you’re arriving late, consider an overnight stay in Playa del Carmen or Tulum for a more relaxed journey the next day.

Door-to-Door Airport Transfers
For ease and convenience, Playa Sonrisa recommends using one of three trusted transportation companies:

Chac Ek - a guest favorite, offering services from Cancun, Tulum, and Chetumal. +52 983 177 1849
Fernando Luna Maya: +52 984 127 8023
AGI TOURS also provide service.

By Public Transport:
Playa Sonrisa can also be accessed via public transport, though it involves several transfers and is best suited for the more adventurous traveler. From Cancun Airport, take a first-class airport bus to Playa del Carmen, then catch an ADO bus to Limones or Mahahual. From there, a pre-arranged taxi will need to bring you the rest of the way to Playa Sonrisa.

Note: Local taxis are not available in Xcalak, so ensure you arrange your return trip when you arrive.

Additional Tips
Vehicle Rental: Major rental agencies like Avis, National, and Budget operate in Cancun and Tulum. Avoid renting from Hertz due to restrictive clauses regarding off-pavement driving.
Military Checkpoints: You may encounter military checkpoints. Remain calm, identify yourself as a tourist, and comply with any inspection requests.
Driving Directions: Detailed driving directions will be emailed along with your reservation confirmation. Ensure you print these out as cell service can be unreliable.
Coming Soon: The Mayan Train will offer an alternative travel option with stops in Cancun, Tulum, and Limones, enhancing access to this remote paradise.

Review: Why You Need to Book a Visit to Playa Sonrisa

Review: Why You Need to Book a Visit to Playa Sonrisa

Sun, sand, and beautiful Mexican weather—all without a tan line in sight. Sound like paradise? That’s because it is. Playa Sonrisa is the ultimate warm-weather getaway, a hidden gem that redefines what it means to relax in your own skin. While I was itching to pack my bags and head down to experience it myself, life with a newborn meant that wasn’t in the cards this time. So, we sent our trusted friend Francelli to explore the resort on our behalf, and the footage she sent back? Absolutely dreamlike. Most people know Zipolite as Mexico’s go-to clothing-optional destination, but Playa Sonrisa offers something entirely different. Nestled off the beaten path in the tranquil Caribbean region of Quintana Roo, this off-the-grid retreat is an adventurous escape that also lets you fully unwind. It’s a game-changer for anyone looking to disconnect from the daily grind while enjoying a completely liberating vacation experience. Getting There: The Journey to Paradise Playa Sonrisa is located about five hours south of Cancun or three hours south of Tulum, tucked along the pristine coastline of the Xcalak National Marine Park. The journey itself is part of the adventure, taking you through breathtaking landscapes until you reach the resort. Yes, it’s remote, but that’s the magic of it. This isn’t a crowded, cookie-cutter all-inclusive—it’s an intimate boutique resort that feels like your own personal slice of paradise. Activities: Dive Into Adventure One of the standout features of Playa Sonrisa is its location near the world’s second-largest coral reef, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The resort has its own dive school, making it an ideal spot for both seasoned scuba divers and beginners looking to explore the underwater world. Imagine snorkeling or diving naked, surrounded by vibrant coral reefs, manatees, sea turtles, stingrays, and schools of colorful fish. It’s truly magical. As one of the instructors put it, “It’s amazing because everything is better naked.” If diving isn’t your thing, you can also kayak or try stand-up paddleboarding. And for those who prefer staying closer to shore, there’s a pool where you can relax and soak up the sun. Accommodations: Off-the-Grid Comfort The resort’s accommodations are just as impressive as its location. Playa Sonrisa offers a range of options, from beachfront bungalows to rooms with stunning water views. Every room comes with its own bathroom, ensuring your comfort during your stay. What truly sets this place apart is its commitment to sustainability. The entire resort runs on solar power and rainwater, making it a model for eco-friendly travel. While Wi-Fi is available, Playa Sonrisa encourages guests to disconnect and embrace the slower pace of life. A quick tip: Leave your curling irons and hairdryers at home. Solar power means no heating elements, and trust me, you won’t need them in this laid-back, natural paradise. Dining: Fresh, Local, and Delicious When it’s time to refuel, the on-site restaurant and bar deliver. The food is fresh and flavorful, with options ranging from hearty breakfast buffets to creative cocktails like the Tiki Teal punch, a house specialty crafted by the owner, Blaney. One of the most charming aspects of Playa Sonrisa is the community vibe. Meals are served in a shared space where guests can connect, swap stories, and share laughs. It’s a unique opportunity to meet like-minded travelers in a relaxed and welcoming setting. And don’t stress about payments—both pesos and credit cards are accepted. Just keep in mind that the nearest ATM is about an hour away, so it’s a good idea to bring cash as a backup. The Naked Truth Playa Sonrisa isn’t just another resort; it’s a destination that celebrates freedom, nature, and the joy of living life in your own skin. For anyone who loves the idea of a clothing-optional getaway but wants to avoid the crowds of more well-known spots, this is the perfect escape. The location may be remote, but that’s part of its charm. It’s not just a place to vacation—it’s a place to rediscover yourself, disconnect from the chaos of daily life, and connect with the beauty of nature. Ready to Book? They have a saying at Playa Sonrisa: “It’s not so easy to get to, but it’s even harder to leave.” And that couldn’t be more true. Click here to see their website and availability. Naturism Is Dying… Meanwhile the Beaches Are Packed.

Naturism Is Dying… Meanwhile the Beaches Are Packed.

Plan the funeral. Throw in the towel. Shut the gates at nudist clubs because Gen X, Y, and Z “aren’t interested.” That’s the narrative we keep hearing. Membership numbers are down. Clubs are closing. Maybe it’s because of phones and privacy? Maybe gaming and Netflix are more popular hobbies? On paper, the numbers do look bleak. AANR’s membership has been sliding for years. The German Nudist Federation has dropped from a peak of around 65,000 to under 35,000. And if California – the most liberal, sun-drenched state in the U.S. – can’t support nudist clubs, what hope is there? But here’s the thing: stop measuring naturism by the same tired yardstick. Step onto a beach, and you’ll see the truth. Naturism isn’t dead, it’s booming. The Beaches Tell the Real Story Take Denny Blaine in Seattle. When that little nude beach was threatened with closure, the local government was hit with over 10,000 signatures in less than two weeks. Ten thousand people fighting to keep their clothing-optional space. That doesn’t look like a dying lifestyle, that looks like passion. Or look at Wreck Beach in Vancouver. Just across the water, the VanTan Nudist Club struggles to keep its doors open. But Wreck? Packed. Especially with younger people. Miami’s Haulover, Austin’s Hippie Hollow, Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point – same story. again Clubs might be fading, but the beaches are thriving. Come As You Are If I had to sum it up in one line, it’s this: younger people are into naturism, just not in the way older generations expect. I wrote this in a Reddit thread recently, and it hit home with a lot of Gen Z and millennials: “Gen Z is interested in naturism but not in the typical way. They feel no need to join a club and will do it casually without labels… think body positivity, freedom, expression. Organisations like AANR should be at nude beaches or online promoting themselves to the new generation. But instead, they focus on dwindling club figures and assume younger people aren’t interested.” That’s it right there. We don’t need a membership card or a committee to validate our nudity. We just show up. It’s not about labels, it’s about freedom. Situational Nudity & Social Media Brendan Jones, the guy behind Get Naked Australia, calls it “situational nudity.” You’re not a nudist 24/7 – but when the moment’s right, you strip down. His group grew to 270,000 followers on Instagram, more than all the nudist organizations worldwide combined. And guess what? They never once called themselves “nudists.” This is what the traditionalists miss: the old metrics don’t apply anymore. People don’t need to join a club or labels to embrace naturism. They just need a good spot, a safe space, and maybe a few friends to share it with. The Shift: From Shuffleboard to Paddleboards For younger generations, simply providing a place to get naked isn’t enough. In the past, nudity was the event. Now? We want more. Paddleboarding naked. Snorkeling naked. Hiking naked. A place where our clothed friends feel welcome too. The resorts and clubs that get this are thriving. Cypress Cove in Florida has leaned hard into social media, and they’re seeing more young families and groups. Playa Sonrisa in Mexico attracts a steady wave of 25–35 year-olds thanks to a “fresh, energetic vibe.” Even some traditional parks are trying new ideas, like clothing-optional days, to lower the barrier for newcomers. Why This Matters Naturism isn’t about whether a spreadsheet of club memberships is going up or down. It’s about whether people are still embracing body freedom, connecting with nature, and creating community. And the answer to that is a resounding yes. The movement is alive, but it’s different. It’s less about institutions, more about authenticity. Less about rules, more about choice. Less about labels, more about living in the moment. Naturism isn’t dying – it’s evolving. And if you ask me, that’s the best thing that could happen to it. Final thought: If we want naturism to thrive, the challenge for clubs and resorts is simple: adapt. Embrace the vibe of younger generations: spontaneity, inclusivity, fun. Stop worrying about what naturism “used to look like” and start leaning into what it feels like now. Come as you are. That’s all it takes.
