Nudity Policy

OPTIONAL

Nudity is common

The Good

  • Crystal-clear turquoise water: The sea here is exceptionally clear, with visibility down to the sandy bottom in shallow areas. The colors shift beautifully, especially in the sunlight, making it one of the standout swimming spots in eastern Crete.
  • Soft sandy beach: Unlike many rocky Cretan coves, Alona has fine sand both on the shore and under the water. It makes walking, lying down, and entering the sea comfortable without the need for shoes.
  • Gentle, swimmable bay: The small waves and sheltered shape of the bay create safe and enjoyable swimming conditions. It is ideal for floating, wading, and relaxed time in the water.
  • Quiet and uncrowded: Even in good weather, the beach does not draw large crowds due to its location. You can usually find space and enjoy a peaceful stretch of coastline.
  • Naturist-friendly atmosphere: Nudity is common and widely accepted, with the majority of visitors embracing it while others remain in swimwear without issue. The mix is generally relaxed and respectful.
  • Explorable rocky edges: The rocks around the bay add a bit of variety, offering places to wander, sit, or take in the view from different angles.

The Bad

  • Rough access road: The final stretch is a dirt road that can be steep and uneven. It requires careful driving and may not suit all vehicles.
  • No shade at all: There are no natural shaded areas, so the sun can feel intense without an umbrella or cover.
  • No amenities: There are no toilets, shops, or services, so you need to bring everything with you.
  • Heat exposure: The combination of sand, lack of shade, and open bay can make it feel very hot during peak hours.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Alona Beach is a quiet, undeveloped beach on Crete’s eastern coast and a good option if you’re looking for somewhere where nudity is common.

Access can be a little rough, so don’t expect an easy drive-up beach with facilities waiting for you. Once you arrive, though, there’s a wide stretch of sand, clear water and plenty of space to spread out.

Naturists usually make up most of the crowd, so stripping off here feels completely normal. There are no beach bars, sunbeds or services, which keeps it much quieter than many of Crete’s better-known beaches.

Bring water, food and anything else you’ll need for the day, and be prepared for a more basic beach experience.

Alona Beach is a recommended nude beach in Crete, especially if you prefer somewhere simple, quiet and predominantly naturist.

Insider Tip

Come prepared with an umbrella, plenty of water, and snacks, as there is nothing available on site. Drive slowly along the dirt road or consider parking earlier and walking the last stretch if you are unsure. Late morning to early afternoon gives you the best water color, but arriving earlier helps avoid the strongest heat.

Who's Here

Mostly naturists, along with a handful of relaxed travelers and couples who appreciate quiet, remote beaches.

Beach Surface

Fine golden sand both on the shore and underfoot in the shallow water.

Access Difficulty

Moderate, due to a rough dirt road followed by a short walk to the beach.
