OPTIONALClothing-optional beyond Ramp 5
The Good
- Naturist Area: The clothing-optional section begins south of Ramp 5, with most regulars continuing farther down the shoreline for a quieter experience. This long-established area is one of the few places in Florida where social nudity is legally accepted within the county.
- Natural Setting: There are no hotels, houses, or commercial buildings behind the dunes. The undeveloped coastline creates a peaceful atmosphere that feels very different from Florida's resort beaches.
- Spacious Beach: Even on busier weekends, the shoreline stretches far enough that visitors can spread out with ease. Walking a little farther south usually provides even more space and privacy.
- Wildlife: Dolphins are occasionally seen offshore, while shorebirds and sea turtles are part of the area's protected ecosystem during nesting season. The surrounding national seashore adds to the feeling of being immersed in nature.
- Boardwalk Access: A wooden boardwalk crosses the dunes directly from the parking area, making the walk to the sand straightforward while protecting the fragile dune habitat. Accessible parking is available near the ramp.
- Friendly Community: Regular naturists help maintain a respectful atmosphere where people come primarily to relax, swim, sunbathe, and enjoy the beach without unnecessary attention.
The Bad
- Small Parking Lot: Ramp 5 fills very quickly on warm weekends. Once the spaces are gone, there are very few alternatives nearby, making an early arrival important.
- Few Facilities: Aside from vault toilets, there are no food stalls, drinking water, beach rentals, or showers at Ramp 5. Visitors need to bring everything they will need for the day.
- Entry Fee: Access to Canaveral National Seashore requires a park entrance fee unless you have a valid National Parks pass.
- Rough Surf: Ocean conditions can become strong with rip currents depending on weather and tides. There are no lifeguards, so swimming requires good judgment.
- Shell Covered Sand: Much of the beach consists of crushed coquina shells rather than soft powder sand. Some visitors find barefoot walking uncomfortable over longer distances.
- Early Gate Closures: During busy periods the park may stop admitting vehicles once parking reaches capacity, making an early arrival essential.
The Naked Truth
Apollo Beach Ramp 5 is one of Florida’s classic clothing-optional beaches, but it still feels refreshingly low-key. Head to the last parking area in the Apollo district and you’ll find a long, undeveloped stretch of Canaveral National Seashore where nude sunbathing has been part of the beach culture for years.
There are no beach clubs, rentals or development here - just dunes, soft sand and the Atlantic. Parking at Ramp 5 is limited, so arriving early is a very good idea, especially on weekends. Once you’re on the beach, people tend to spread out quickly and the atmosphere is relaxed and easygoing.
If you enjoy Apollo, Playalinda Beach is the other famous nude beach within Canaveral National Seashore, accessed from the Titusville side. Apollo generally feels quieter and more spread out, while Playalinda has traditionally attracted a larger naturist crowd.
Insider Tip
Get there before 8:00 AM on weekends if you want a parking space near Ramp 5. Bring plenty of drinking water, food, sunscreen, shade, and beach shoes for the shell-covered sand. Stay on the boardwalks to protect the dunes, and continue south from Ramp 5 to reach the established naturist section.
Who's Here
Expect to meet longtime Florida naturists, couples, solo visitors, retirees, and respectful first-time clothing-optional beachgoers looking for a peaceful day by the ocean.
Beach Surface
Underfoot you'll find firm sand mixed with crushed coquina shells, with occasional shell patches that make lightweight beach footwear worthwhile.
Access Difficulty
Easy overall thanks to the boardwalk from Ramp 5, although arriving early is important because parking is limited and fills quickly.
