The Good
- Nudity is not given: Visitors have described the vibe changing each day or week and nudity very uncommon here at times. Use your judgement as to whether you strip off - it is more widely practised at other Saint Martin nude beaches. The Instagrammable Baie Rouge sign attracts a lot of textiles.. But your best chance of stripping off is to the far end of the beach near the rocks.
- Spectacular natural beauty: Often described as one of the most beautiful beaches on St. Maarten, Baie Rouge features soft sand that can appear slightly pink when the sunlight reflects off the water.
- Clear water and good swimming spots: While the water deepens quickly, confident swimmers enjoy excellent swimming conditions, especially at low tide. The far right side near the rocks tends to be the calmest and most suitable for entering the water.
- Peaceful and rarely crowded: Visitors often find the beach nearly empty, creating a private, tranquil atmosphere. Known as a “hidden gem” by locals, it’s ideal for relaxation, quiet strolls, and sunset watching.
- Decent snorkeling opportunities: On the far northern end, swimming around the rocks toward David’s Hole or David’s Cove offers rewarding snorkeling with colorful fish and unique rock formations.
- Public parking available: Free parking is available and usually sufficient outside peak times.
The Bad
- Limited shade and no amenities: There are no bars, restaurants, toilets, food stands, or chair/umbrella rentals. Palm trees are no longer present, so sun protection must be brought. Arrive early if planning to use shade from shrubs or near the stair area.
- Water can be rough with strong undertows: The sea can be choppy at times; particularly during windy periods or high tide. Not ideal for children or inexperienced swimmers. Currents near rock areas require caution.
- Access irregularities and parking quirks: Parking entrance is via a private-looking gate that only opens from around 7 AM. Some visitors report unclear access points, limited space (around 5 cars), and unconventional parking arrangements. In some cases, individuals request small fees informally.
- Insect issues at sunset: Late afternoon and early evening can bring sand fleas or “no-see-ums.” Visitors staying past 5 PM report noticeable bites. Insect repellent is highly recommended.
- Navigation challenges: Google Maps directions can be inaccurate due to private constructions nearby. The road can be narrow, with traffic congestion in peak hours.
- Occasional aggressive dogs near villas: Some visitors report encounters with loose dogs at the beach access area; exercise caution near the villa with glass panels facing the beach.
The Naked Truth
Baie Rouge looks like a place where anything might happen; but in reality, it’s mostly a clothed beach with a relaxed tolerance for privacy. The beauty is undeniable: wide pale sand with a faint pink glow in the right light, dramatic cliffs, and water that shifts from calm to powerful depending on the day. When it’s quiet; and it often is; it feels almost private, especially toward the rocky ends where nudity occurs sometimes.
That said, nudity here is not the norm, unlike nearby Orient Beach or Happy Bay Beach. Most visitors are clothed couples and low-key travelers, and while a discreet nude swim or quick sun moment at the far right might pass unnoticed, it’s not expected and not protected. Add in rougher water at times, no shade, quirky access, and the occasional dog or parking hassle, and this beach rewards caution and awareness. Baie Rouge is best enjoyed for its scenery, solitude, and swimming; not as a place to push boundaries.
Insider Tip
Head to the far right end of the beach (near the rocks) for the calmest water and best swimming - this is where nudity can occur. For those comfortable in the water, swimming around the rocks leads to a small quiet cove and closer view of David’s Hole.
Who's Here
Mostly couples, quieter travelers, and occasional local visitors; particularly on weekends. Generally non-naturist, however discreet nude swimming may occur away from the main area.
Beach Surface
Soft, clean sand with occasional sandstone and rock areas near the edges. Flat and comfortable for towel placement.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: Direct drive-up access via a gated entrance. Small parking lot, best suited for compact vehicles. The road is somewhat narrow and requires careful navigation. No walking hike required once parked.

Getting There
Located on the French (Saint-Martin) side, west of Marigot, near the Terres Basses area.
By Car: From Marigot, drive west along Rue de Sandy Ground toward Terres Basses. Continue onto Rue de Baie Rouge. As the road curves near the salt lake, look for an entrance that resembles an old resort or private villa gate marked “Baie Rouge.” Despite signs suggesting private property (for nearby villas), public access to the beach is allowed. The gate usually opens around 7:00 AM. Parking is limited and informal, so arrive early and expect tight maneuvering.
By Public Transport: There is no direct public bus service to Baie Rouge Beach. Most visitors arrive by rental car or taxi from Marigot or nearby areas.
