The Good

  • Natural Beauty: Baltata is a nature reserve, so the beach is surrounded by pristine forest, giving it a unique and secluded feel. These forests are rare in Bulgaria, especially in urban settings - it is very peaceful and tranquil.
  • Easy access: The huge resorts to the north and south of the beach provide easy access to the beach. Simply find a free car park and walk along the beach for 100m or so. Unlike other beaches with easy access, this one is sparsely populated and spread out.
  • Friendly community: This part of the beach is maintained by a group of friendly local regulars who will make you feel welcome without being intrusive.
  • Clean beach and sand: The water here is crystal clear and the bottom is sandy. No rocks or seaweed which is a bonus in Bulgaria

The Bad

  • Lack of amenities: Despite its proximity to major resorts, the facilities at Therma Beach are currently rudimentary. As the beach is under development, the provided facilities, particularly the restrooms, fall short in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. It's advisable to bring your own food and drinks. However, parking on the dirt road at Therma Beach is a plus point, as it's free
  • Lots of foot traffic: Because the beach is located between two resorts there are a lot of people walking the sand past the nude beach. Most of them are clothed and not bothered by the sight of nude people, but is something to be aware of.
  • Windy: The beach is wide and open to the elements so beware that the wind can whip up very quickly here.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Baltata Beach is a gem and one that is rarely mentioned online, but in the know locals are well aware. It offers are great laidback alternative to busier city beaches, like Nirvana Beach in nearby Golden Sands. The beach's prime location within a nature reserve rewards you with a tranquil setting and natural beauty that is difficult to rival. The sandy beach and clear waters are enticing and well-maintained by the local community, who are as warm and welcoming as the environment. Be prepared for a lack of quality amenities and bring all your food and drink. But if you're a purist looking for natural charm and authenticity over modern facilities, Baltata might just be worth the journey.

Insider Tip

The easiest access is via Therma Beach where free parking and bathrooms are also available

Baltata Beach rarely appears online as a nude beach in Bulgaria, mostly overshadowed by nearby Nirvana Beach in Golden Sands or the remote and wild Irakli Beach - both are stunning and highly recommended nude beaches for totally different reasons. We weren't sure what to expect at Baltata Beach just because there is barely any info and most of it is extremely out of date. Is it still nude? Has it been destroyed by the development of resorts nearby? The answer is thankfully yes and delightfully no. Despite a lot of construction in this area Baltata Beach is still loved by locals and very authentic.

Nestled between two resorts, Baltata Beach is a serene haven. It appears that many visitors don't venture much beyond the comforts of the resorts, resulting in a quiet nude beach mainly populated by locals. When we arrived a burly Bulgarian made made his way over to us rather quickly and we weren't sure what to expect when he started talking in Bulgarian. However once he realised we were tourists he welcomed us warmly and explained that people normally pay for the umbrellas but because we're a long way from home we can have it for free. It was a nice gesture and everyone else on the sparsely populated beach was very laidback and enjoying the sun. It was a mixture of older and younger Bulgarian couples mostly.

The beach is located in a nature reserve which is completely devoid of walkable trails, so you'll need to access it via the beach at Therma Village. You could also access it from the north but you would need to pay for parking here and the walk is slightly longer. From the dirt road at Therma Village it is barely a 100m walk past the water sports hut and crossing a very small river. Our visit to Therma Village left much to be desired. The place fell short of our expectations set by online images - the restroom facilities were in an appalling state, and dust clouds filled the air each time a car entered the parking lot. The food establishments also appeared to be closed for the better part of the day. It's possible that future improvements might enhance the visitor experience, but for now, the high point is the free parking and straightforward access to the beach.

It would be wise to bring along any essentials, including food, drinks, and perhaps some cash for umbrella rental, in case you don't want to rely on the locals' generosity every time. We stocked up on fresh baking at nearby Kranevo and had absolutely no regrets! Beer is also extremely inexpensive in the grocery stores if you want to take a cold refreshment. Also, remember to carry your own beach towel or mat as there are no rentals available. The sand is soft and fluffy so you don't need too much padding.

While the foot traffic from the resorts can be a bit of a nuisance, don't let it deter you. Most people walking by are generally indifferent to the nudity and do not disturb the peace. If you're a bit more on the conservative side, finding a spot closer to the nature reserve might be more comfortable. The beach is very relaxed and would be perfect for first timers.

All in all, Baltata Beach offers an authentic and laid-back nude beach experience, wrapped up in an enchanting natural setting. It's the kind of place that'll have you longing for just one more day in the sun. Despite its minor inconveniences, its charm is undeniable, and the sense of tranquility it instills is well worth the visit. We're glad it is a more low key option and still exists despite the lack of information online. But shhhhhh don't tell anyone!

Getting There

Baltata Beach is easy to visit for a daytrip from either Varna or Golden Sands, especially if you have your own car. Keep in mind that the exact location of the nude beach is a little further north from the main Therma Beach. You will need to walk about 100 meters down the beach from the main parking area to reach the nude beach. Once you've crossed the small river on the beach (past the water sports kiosk) you're very close to the nude beach, which you should notice from the umbrella and lounger rentals next to the sand dunes.

By Public Transport:

  1. If you are in Varna or Albena, you can take the local bus to Balchik. Buses run regularly throughout the day.
  2. Once you arrive in Balchik, you can either walk to the beach (it's about a 30-minute walk) or take a taxi.

By Car:

  1. If you're coming from Varna, head north on Route 9 towards Balchik.
  2. As you approach Albena, there are signs for Baltata Nature Reserve. Take this exit and follow the signs to the beach.
  3. Free parking is available on the dirt road at Therma Beach.

HOTEL LAGUNA SEA SIDE APARTMENTS WITH PRIVATE BEACH GOLDEN SANDS (Bulgaria) | BOOKED

Laguna Beach Resort - ⭐️⭐️
This laidback RV park with cottages is a short drive from Baltata Beach but a world away from the giant monstrosities on this section of sand. It's a different vibe from the all-inclusive and sterile resorts that dot the coastline.
It feels like you are staying in a nature reserve and as an added bonus you're right next to Nirvana Nude Beach.
Staff are friendly and the restaurant here is affordable + very tasty! The bungalows are basic but clean. Nudity isn't allowed here or on Laguna Beach - but you are very close to the nude section.

Other non-nude options:
There are plenty of nearby all-inclusive and massive hotel complexes. Boutique hotels and guesthouses are also starting to pop up as well.

Bulgarian nude beaches are stunning

Europe's Most Underrated Naturist Location - Bulgaria

When people think of naturist destinations, Bulgaria rarely comes to mind - not for spectacular beaches, and certainly not as a country known for openness around nudity. In the collective imagination, Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast is more often associated with cheap all-inclusive holidays than with freedom by the sea. And yet, after spending time along the Black Sea coast, one question kept coming up: why is no one talking about this? Bulgaria is a quiet naturist paradise. It doesn’t market itself as a nudist destination - and perhaps that’s precisely because the relationship with the body is already deeply woven into local beach culture. On many beaches, especially outside cities and large resorts, as long as the beach isn’t crowded, swimwear simply becomes optional… and no one makes a fuss about it. We set ourselves a simple rule: only undress if others are already doing so. Not out of shyness, but out of respect for the local atmosphere. In Bulgaria, that rule turned out to be remarkably easy to follow. We often saw families enjoying the sun without clothes, children running freely, parents chatting, people reading, napping or swimming.. and no one seemed to care whether you were dressed or naked. Nude, half-nude, or fully clothed, everything coexisted naturally. The Black Sea Coast: Between Concrete and Freedom To be fair, the reputation of Bulgaria’s coastline isn’t entirely undeserved. Decades of aggressive development have left their mark - rectangular hotels, endless umbrellas, and resort towns that can feel overwhelming. But what truly surprised us was what still exists between these heavily developed areas. Sometimes you drive past rows of resorts, then turn onto a rougher road and suddenly arrive at a wild beach with no hotels in sight. The contrast is striking. You move through a coastline that seems “sold off,” then stumble upon a pocket of nature that has somehow escaped the concrete. On these raw, undeveloped beaches, nudity feels less like a lifestyle statement and more like an instinctive return to simplicity - almost a natural response to the environment. Mini-Guide to the Beaches We Visited Nessebar FKK aka “Beach for Nude People” (Nessebar) Probably the most clearly naturist beach we visited. Access is short but steep, with loose gravel. Shade near the cliff is valuable, while sun-seekers will prefer spots closer to the water. Despite cigarette butts in the sand, the water is beautiful and the atmosphere exactly what you hope for from an openly nudist beach. Nirvana Beach (Golden Sands) One of Bulgaria’s most popular tourist nudist beaches. Physically separated from the textile area, it feels worlds away from the energy of Golden Sands. Soft sand, usually calm and warm water, and a lively beach bar make this a successful “city nudist beach.” It’s social, relaxed, and frequented mostly by couples and young families. Kamchia / Kamchiya Beach Despite its proximity to resorts, Kamchia has retained a clearly identifiable naturist section. The walk can feel long in the heat, but arriving to see people sunbathing nude is reassuring. Golden sand, a very gradual entry into the sea — perfect for children - and a distinctly local feel. Depending on the day, seaweed can accumulate, but there’s even a small mud-bathing spot loved by locals. Kara Dere Beautiful, wild, and demanding. The road is in poor condition and requires some planning. Once there, the beach is stunning. Naturism is accepted, but there are more textile visitors than expected. It’s not the best first nudist experience, but for those seeking an untouched, raw Bulgaria, Kara Dere delivers. Irakli Beach An absolute favourite. A long stretch of golden sand, wooded hills, and a timeless atmosphere. Walk past the resort at the northern end and everything changes: most people are nude, and no one makes an issue of it. Calm couples, families, backpackers, and hippies all come here for the same reason — to disconnect. Spacious, welcoming, and authentic, Irakli captures the magic of the Bulgarian coast. Sunny Beach (Naturist Section) - A Hard No Our only truly bad experience. Too close to major resort beaches and frequented by heavily intoxicated tourists, the atmosphere felt unsafe. We left immediately after witnessing a completely inappropriate sexual act. Thankfully, Bulgaria offers far better options. What Bulgaria Taught Us Bulgaria reminded us that naturism doesn’t always need signs, labels, or strict rules. Sometimes it’s simply an unspoken cultural agreement: be naked if you want, stay dressed if you prefer - and let others enjoy the sea. That’s why Bulgaria feels like a hidden paradise. Not because it sells itself as a naturist destination, but precisely because it doesn’t need to. We highly recommend you explore and discover the Black Sea and naturist beaches in Bulgaria.
