The Good

  • Vast and beautiful: Birdie Beach is a long, open stretch of fine white sand backed by dunes and native grasses, forming part of Munmorah State Conservation Area on the NSW Central Coast. The views are spectacular, especially near the lagoon and Snapper Point lookout.
  • Easy facilities: There’s a large car park with toilets and pay stations, and multiple walking tracks linking to nearby Frazer Beach and Moonee Beach. The beach itself is patrolled in the family areas but not in the clothing-optional zone.
  • Room to breathe: The northern end - designated for nude bathing in Australia - is spacious, natural, and generally respectful. Most visitors set up far apart, creating a relaxed and uncrowded vibe. The southern and central stretches are more family-friendly and good for fishing or picnics.
  • Perfect for walkers: The trail from Birdie Beach Drive offers one of the coast’s best barefoot walks, with soft sand underfoot and the sound of surf rolling endlessly beside you.

The Bad

  • Inconsistent crowd behavior: While many visitors enjoy a relaxed naturist experience in Australia, several reviews warn about inappropriate conduct by lone males in the nude area. Female visitors and couples have reported being followed or harassed, especially on quieter days.
  • Exposed conditions: There’s almost no natural shade, and winds can pick up along the dunes. Bring sun protection, plenty of water, and a beach tent if you plan to stay long.
  • Strict park enforcement: Rangers monitor parking and entry closely. Fines can be issued for improper stops or unpaid tickets, even for brief visits.
  • Tricky navigation: Some GPS directions lead to Elizabeth Bay Drive instead of Birdie Beach Drive; make sure your route ends at the official car park
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Birdie Beach is one of NSW’s most famous clothing-optional beaches; wild, expansive, and visually stunning. The naturist section north of the car park is officially recognized and easy to find, offering miles of soft sand and clear surf.

However, it’s not without flaws. The open setting attracts both genuine naturists and, occasionally, inappropriate visitors. For most, it’s still a refreshing, liberating place to swim, walk, and unwind in nature, provided you remain aware of your surroundings.

With its dunes, coastal walks, and proximity to Snapper Point’s caves and blowholes, Birdie Beach rewards those who come prepared for both beauty and the elements.

Insider Tip

Head north from the car park to reach the clothing-optional zone. Stay near the waterline for visibility and comfort, and avoid the dunes if alone. Visit on weekends or sunny days when respectful crowds balance the atmosphere.

Who's Here

A mix of naturists, local couples, solo swimmers, and coastal walkers. Families frequent the southern end; the northern section caters to nude recreation.

Beach Surface

Soft, fine white sand with low dunes and open surf.

Access Difficulty

Easy: paved access road and short sand walk from the car park.
