The Good
- Scenic coastal cove: It sits right at the western entrance to Wellington Harbour, giving dramatic views over the harbour mouth, Pencarrow Head, and open sea.
- Multiple walking routes: You can take the ridge track from the escarpment, the coastal path beneath cliffs, or loop via the Eastern Walkway.
- Historical features: Remnants of Māori pā sites and WWII gun emplacements exist above the beach, with interpretive signs in Oruaiti / Point Dorset Reserve.
- Nudity tolerated: Breaker Bay is known locally as a clothes-optional beach in New Zealand where naturists and clothed bathers mix.
- Quiet and natural: The lack of development helps preserve its wild feel, less crowded than many Wellington nude beaches.
The Bad
- No facilities: No toilets, concessions, shelter, or changing rooms.
- Steep / uneven terrain: The slopes up to ridges and paths down to the beach are rough, and beach access involves uneven ground.
- Strong surf & currents: Waves can be rough and unpredictable; rules for safe swimming aren’t posted.
- Exposure to wind: The bay can be windy, especially from the Cook Strait side, making sunbathing or full nudity less comfortable on windy days.
- Partial coverage: Only parts of the beach further from the car park tend to host nude use; near the car park people usually stay clothed.
The Naked Truth
Breaker Bay occupies that sweet middle ground, close enough to Wellington to be accessible via public transit, but wild enough to feel remote. There’s no formal “nude beach” status, but nudity has long been tolerated here, especially farther from the car park.
Historically, New Zealand doesn’t have officially designated nude beaches; public nudity is legal if the location is “known to occur.” In practice, beachgoers often wear or remove clothing based on comfort, time of day, and how exposed the section is.
Insider Tip
Later in the day (evening), the nude-friendly portions tend to get used more. If you're walking from the bus or car park, head toward the rocky “hole in the rock” point and beyond - that’s where people often drop clothing. Also, check tide and wind conditions before wading far.
Who's Here
Locals, naturists, hikers, photographers, people walking the Miramar Peninsula coastline, plus occasional curious visitors from Wellington.
Beach Surface
Black sand / coarse mixed pebbles, rock formations (especially near the “hole in the rock”) and surf-worn stones.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: some steep climbs and rocky stretches.
