The Good

  • Unique Location: As Belgium’s only official naturist beach, Bredene Beach offers a rare, comfortable spot to embrace naturism legally and freely without needing to cross borders.
  • Accessible by Tram: The beach is incredibly easy to access, especially via the coastal tram line, making it convenient even for travelers without a car.
  • Calm Atmosphere: The beach has a laid-back vibe with clean, golden sand that’s perfect for sunbathing and swimming, plus stunning sunsets.
  • Safety and Amenities: Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season, and there are multiple trash cans, making it a clean and relatively well-maintained space.
  • Dog-Friendly: Dogs are welcome on the beach before 10:30 AM and after 6:30 PM, making it a great place for dog owners to enjoy a naturist-friendly area.

The Bad

  • Limited Space: The designated nude section is relatively small, especially at high tide, which can make it feel cramped. Additionally, naturists aren’t allowed to cross into nearby textile areas.
  • Few Facilities: There’s a noticeable lack of facilities. The only available toilets are not well-maintained, and visitors must bring their own food and drinks as there’s no café nearby.
  • Issues with Dogs: While dogs are permitted at certain times, complaints about dog poo on the beach are common, which can impact the overall cleanliness.
  • High Presence of Men and Some Voyeurs: Some visitors note a higher proportion of men and an occasional issue with voyeurism. While this doesn’t bother most people, it may affect others' comfort levels.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Bredene Beach (or Bredene Strand as it is known locally) offers a unique naturist experience as the only nude beach in the county. It is ideal for those seeking an official nude beach in Belgium. The beach is easy to reach, peaceful, and provides a welcoming atmosphere for a nude place, but a few issues remain. The limited naturist area can feel cramped during high tide, and there are minimal facilities, so you should come prepared. While the beach generally feels safe and well-maintained, occasional issues with dog waste, voyeurism, and limited lifeguard focus mean it’s not entirely perfect. Still, the charm of this sandy, serene stretch and its unique status make it worth the visit for a relaxed naturist day by the sea. Plus.. it is also the only place to do this in Belgium!

Our Visit

We visited Bredene Beach toward the end of summer, hoping to squeeze in one more beach day before the chill set in. It wasn’t the hottest day by any stretch, but this being the only official nude beach in Belgium, we couldn’t pass up the chance. I’ve been to plenty of European nude beaches before, though never in this part of the world – the novelty of being at Belgium’s one and only legal nude beach was too tempting to resist. And I have to say, it feels quite proudly Belgian; the town has really embraced this as part of their tourism, which makes it feel all the more welcoming.

Getting here was easy – just a quick tram ride to the Bredene Renbaan stop, and then a short walk to the beach. It’s really well signposted, so finding the naturist section is a breeze. What struck me immediately was how extensive the textile area is compared to the nude section. But, oddly enough, plenty of clothed folks chose to sit within the nude area! It felt a bit strange at first, having clothed sunbathers alongside us in a designated nude zone, but they seemed perfectly at ease, so we just shrugged it off.

The beach itself has a lovely sandy stretch, though I imagine it’d be a bit cozier on a warmer day. The wind started picking up in the afternoon, which, unfortunately, cut our beach day short. Our umbrellas turned inside out, and we eventually threw in the towel (literally) and packed up. I took a quick dip in the North Sea, and while it was on the chilly side, it was worth it for the novelty – plus, I didn’t feel out of place at all. In fact, this beach would be brilliant for first-timers who might feel a bit unsure. There’s a relaxed vibe here that feels a bit like back home at nude beaches in Britain, which makes sense considering we’re just across the sea.

Despite hearing that there can occasionally be a few lurkers in the dunes, my friend and I, both women, felt completely safe the entire time. The lifeguard presence helped add to that feeling of security. The locals we spoke with were welcoming, and the beach has a calm, laid-back atmosphere. I’d absolutely recommend Bredene to anyone looking for a friendly introduction to a nude beach – just maybe aim for a warmer day with a bit less wind!

Getting There

Bredene Beach is easily accessible, especially with Belgium’s coastal tram system. Here’s how to get there:

By Public Transport:
The most convenient way to reach Bredene Beach is by taking the coastal tram line, known locally as "Kusttram," which runs along the Belgian coastline from De Panne to Knokke. If you're coming from a nearby city like Ostend, the tram ride is straightforward and scenic, with the closest stop to the beach being Bredene Renbaan (Hippodrome). Once you arrive, take the pedestrian underpass from the tram stop and follow the signs towards the beach, which will guide you to the naturist section.

By Car:
If you’re driving, approach Bredene from the east along the "Koninklijke Baan" (N34). After passing the Royal Ostend Golf Club, keep an eye out for the tram station "Bredene Renbaan" on your left. On your right, you’ll see a sign directing you to the "Naaktstrand, Plage naturiste, FKK strand, Nudist beach." Parking is available along the road, and it’s free. Once parked, head towards the dunes and follow the marked path towards the naturist area, which is about a five-minute walk away.

Recommended Accommodation

There are no clothing-optional accommodations nearby, but you'll find plenty of hotels and other options just a short drive away in Oostende.
