The Good
- Peaceful Devon setting: Budleigh Salterton Beach stretches along the East Devon coast as part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. It’s known for its dramatic red sandstone cliffs, gentle sea breeze, and calming sound of waves rolling over smooth pebbles.
- Clean and unspoiled: Visitors consistently praise how immaculately clean the beach and water are. The pebbles, though not sandy, give it a refreshing charm and a soothing atmosphere away from tourist crowds.
- Easy access and facilities: There are public toilets, nearby cafés, and several car parks such as Lime Kiln. A short walk connects the beach to Budleigh’s small town center, with shops, ice-cream huts, and local seafood options like crab sandwiches.
- Perfect for quiet days: This beach maintains a traditional English coastal feel like the nearby Slapton Sands nude beach; no amusement arcades, no loud entertainment, just sun, sea, and peace. It’s ideal for long walks, reading, or simply sitting on the pebbles to watch the waves.
- Nature and views: The Otter Estuary Nature Reserve at the eastern end is excellent for birdwatching and coastal walks. The South West Coast Path also passes through, offering striking views across East Devon’s coastline.
The Bad
- Pebble terrain: The entire beach is made of large smooth stones, which can be uncomfortable for sunbathing or walking barefoot. Beach shoes are highly recommended.
- Rockfall risk: After heavy rain, rockfalls can occur near the cliffs, it’s advised not to sit too close to the base.
- Mixed opinions: Some visitors dislike the lack of sand and find the steep shelve to the water challenging, while others appreciate the peaceful, unspoiled atmosphere.
- Parking frustration: During busy summer weekends, car parks fill up quickly and parking enforcement can be strict.
- Naturist zone confusion: The nudist section, located around 500 meters west of the main beach, is not clearly marked. Some families have expressed concern about signage and visibility from the textile area.
The Naked Truth
While not officially designated as a naturist site, the western end is used discreetly by naturists, especially during summer. Nudity isn’t required, and the atmosphere remains respectful and low-key. The lack of noise, modern amusements, or flashy attractions makes it a perfect retreat for reflection and slow days by the water.
Those expecting golden sands may be disappointed, but for those who value peace, cleanliness, and authenticity, Budleigh Salterton offers a timeless coastal escape - just bring sturdy shoes, patience for the pebbles, and an appreciation for simple seaside beauty. This is a classic English naturist beach.
