The Good

  • Iconic sunset beach: Cable Beach is world-famous for its sunsets, with fiery reds, oranges, and purples spreading across the Indian Ocean almost every evening.
  • Extraordinarily wide shoreline: With over 22 kilometres of white sand, the beach feels open and vast even when many people are present.
  • Camel rides at sunset: One of the most unique beach experiences in the world; long camel trains walking along the shoreline during golden hour.
  • Soft, walkable sand: The sand is fine, compact, and easy to walk on, especially at low tide.
  • Safe swimming zones: Lifeguards patrol designated areas, making calmer sections suitable for swimming when conditions allow.
  • Easy access from town: Close to resorts, restaurants, and serviced by the Broome Explorer Bus.

The Bad

  • Ongoing construction: Major renovations at the access ramp and car park currently impact the classic Cable Beach experience.
  • No northern 4WD access until late 2026: Driving north of the rocks a major draw; is closed, with reopening expected around 2027.
  • Swimming risks: Box jellyfish (stingers), strong currents, and occasional saltwater crocodile sightings mean swimming should always be cautious and within patrol zones.
  • Very windy at times: Afternoon winds can be strong, blowing sand everywhere.
  • Limited shade: There are few natural shaded areas directly on the beach.
  • Crowded at sunset: The main viewing areas become extremely busy every evening.
  • Tide volatility: The ocean can move quickly; belongings left too close to the water are often claimed by the tide.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Cable Beach is a long established nude beach in Western Australia, located at the far northern end beyond the rocks, traditionally accessed by 4WD. Nudity here is quiet, relaxed, and generally respectful, attracting long-time naturists, solo travelers, couples, and many LGBTQ+ visitors. It is not signposted but widely known among locals and repeat visitors.

At present, access to this section is more limited due to ramp construction, meaning fewer visitors reach it easily. When accessible, the naturist area offers immense space and privacy, stretching for kilometres with plenty of room to spread out. While nudity is legal and accepted in this zone, the main and central sections of Cable Beach remain strictly textile.

Insider Tip

If your goal is the full Cable Beach experience, arrive at least one hour before sunset. Walk further away from the main access points to escape crowds, and always keep your belongings well above the tide line; the water moves faster than it looks.

Who's Here

Tourists, photographers, couples, families, sunset watchers, camel tour groups, surfers, locals, and seasonal travelers. The northern end attracts naturists and long-term Broome visitors.

Beach Surface

Extremely fine, silky white sand with gentle sandbars. Shallow water extends far from shore, though currents can strengthen quickly with tides.

Access Difficulty

Easy: Flat beach access via boardwalks and stairs. Driving access depends on construction phases and tide conditions.
