The Good
- Setting: Tucked within Chesterfield State Forest along the Westfield River, this spot feels removed from everything. The mix of forest, flowing water, and open pebble shoreline creates a calm, almost hidden retreat.
- Naturist Atmosphere: The main beach is generally relaxed and welcoming, with a mix of singles, couples, and small groups. While some associate it with a specific crowd, in reality it draws a diverse range of visitors, especially on warm weekends.
- Terrain: The primary area is a wide pebble beach, which stays clean and open for sunbathing. Across the river and along the edges, you will find quieter, more secluded pockets if you prefer privacy.
- Facilities: This is a natural, undeveloped spot with no built amenities. What you get instead is simplicity and a more raw outdoor experience.
- Sunlight and Scenery: The open stretch of beach gets good sun for most of the day, balanced by shaded forest edges. The river adds a gentle, constant movement that makes the whole place feel peaceful.
- Local Charm: The process of getting there, crossing the river and walking through the woods, gives it a bit of an adventurous feel. It feels like something you have to discover rather than just arrive at.
The Bad
- Food Options: There are no food options nearby, so you need to bring everything with you. Once you are down by the river, leaving and returning is not very convenient.
- Wildlife: Being in a forested area, insects can be present, especially during warmer months. It is not overwhelming, but it is noticeable if you are unprepared.
- Terrain Hazards: The river crossing is usually shallow and slow, but the rocks are slippery. Good footwear is important to avoid losing balance.
- Water Conditions: While generally calm, the river is not always perfectly clear and conditions can change with weather. After rainfall, levels and flow may increase.
- Legal Risk: Nudity is not officially legal in Massachusetts, so there is always a level of discretion needed. Most visitors are aware of this and keep a low profile.
- Behavior in Woods: Activity does happen deeper in the wooded areas behind the beach, which may not be for everyone. Staying in the main open area usually avoids this entirely.
The Naked Truth
Cummington Beach is an informal naturist spot that takes a little effort to reach.
Getting there involves a walk, a river crossing and a less obvious trail, so this isn’t the easiest option if you want simple access. Once you arrive, there’s a mix of more open beach space and quieter corners where you can find a bit more privacy.
There are no major facilities, so bring what you need and expect a fairly basic setup.
The atmosphere is generally low-key, with people swimming, sunbathing and keeping to themselves. It can feel more social in the open areas and more private if you move further away.
If you don’t mind the access and prefer an unofficial, natural setting over a developed nude beach, Cummington Beach is worth checking out.
Insider Tip
Wear water shoes for the river crossing and bring everything you need for the day including water, food, and a bag for your trash. Mornings or early afternoons tend to be the best time if you want a quieter experience. Be mindful of the legal situation and keep things respectful and low-key.
Who's Here
A mixed crowd of mostly adults including solo visitors, couples, and small groups, with a noticeable but not exclusive male presence.
Beach Surface
Pebble beach with rounded stones, plus some rocky and wooded areas along the edges and across the river.
Access Difficulty
Moderate - requires a short trail hike and a shallow river crossing over slippery rocks.

Getting There
Cummington Beach is located along Route 9 in Cummington, Massachusetts, within Chesterfield State Forest on the Westfield River.
By car or on foot: Drive along Route 9 near the intersection with Wilder Rd. From the house at the corner, cross to the water side of the road and look for a Curve Ahead sign. Go over the guardrail and follow the trail down to the river, cross the shallow water, then continue along the marked path through the woods until you reach the main beach area on the left. Parking is available for 5 dollars at the nearby house or at a small roadside pull-off that fills quickly.
By public transport: Public transport options are limited in this area, so reaching the site without a car can be difficult. The closest approach would involve regional transit followed by a long walk, so planning for private transport is strongly recommended.
