The Good
- Beautiful and secluded setting: Cupecoy Beach is widely considered one of the most stunning beaches on the island, with dramatic rocky cliffs, small sandy coves, and unforgettable sunset views. Its tucked-away location adds to the feeling of exclusivity and serenity.
- Clothing-optional beach: Known as the only officially legal clothing-optional beach on the Dutch side, it attracts those who prefer naturist sunbathing or simply don’t mind sharing the space respectfully. Visitors often describe a relaxed, accepting atmosphere.
- Danny’s Beach Bar: A landmark at one end of the beach, Danny’s offers beach chairs, umbrella rentals, drinks, and light food (including highly praised homemade rum punch, ribs, and chicken). A rare convenience for such a secluded beach.
- Soft sand and idyllic sunset spot: Sand is described as soft and “sink-in” fine. Sunset hours are especially spectacular, with dazzling light reflecting against the cliffs and water. Many consider it one of the best sunset locations on Sint Maarten.
- Quiet, intimate vibe: Typically uncrowded, especially during weekdays. Perfect for visitors seeking privacy and peaceful relaxation. Several small coves can feel almost private.
The Bad
- Difficult to access and easy to miss: Finding the beach can be confusing. Some access routes feel like leading to private land. Trails across scrub areas or steep stairs are required. GPS may not be reliable.
- Rugged entry and safety concerns: Parts of the beach are rocky, and water conditions are often rough with strong shore breaks. Not ideal for swimming or lounging all day. Water shoes are recommended. Steps down to the beach can be unstable, use caution.
- Limited shade and natural cover: No natural shade and few places to avoid sun. Bring your own umbrella or rent from Danny’s. Conditions can be harsh without proper sun protection.
- Variable beach size by season: Beach size has historically fluctuated significantly, especially after hurricanes. Some years offer wide sand areas, while others present only narrow strips.
- Sand fleas and insects late afternoon: Visitors staying past sunset may encounter biting insects, so repellent is advised.
The Naked Truth
Cupecoy Beach is dramatic, permissive, and a little unruly; exactly what gives it its charm. This is the only officially legal clothing-optional beach in Saint Martin on the Dutch side, and nudity here feels normal rather than provocative. The cliffs, hidden coves, and glowing sunsets create an atmosphere that’s intimate and cinematic, especially late in the day when couples and regulars settle in and the light softens.
But this isn’t an easy or gentle beach. Access can feel sketchy, the water is often rough, and the sand comes and goes with the seasons. You’ll need to earn your spot; by navigating the paths, watching the waves, and bringing sun protection. Danny’s Beach Bar adds rare comfort and personality, but beyond that, Cupecoy remains raw and changeable. If you want a polished resort beach, look elsewhere. If you’re comfortable with nudity, uneven terrain, and a bit of adventure in exchange for unforgettable views, Cupecoy delivers one of the most distinctive beach experiences on Sint Maarten.
Insider Tip
If driving, park in front of the abandoned Blue Mall or follow signs to Danny’s Beach Bar. Parking typically costs around $5 or up to $20 if including chair rentals.
Who's Here
A mix of naturists, relaxed tourists, and loyal repeat visitors; many familiar with the beach’s unofficial reputation.
Beach Surface
Small to medium sandy coves with soft, powdery sand. Rock formations cover much of the waterline, with swimming areas best found where sand meets water without rock interference. Strong currents are common.
Access Difficulty
Moderate to challenging: The beach is not directly visible from the road. Requires walking over scrub terrain or descending uneven stairs from Danny’s. Directions may feel unclear at first.

Getting There
Located on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten, near Maho and opposite the abandoned Blue Mall.
By Car: From Maho Beach area, drive west toward Cupecoy via Rhine Road. Pass Blue Mall on your right (now abandoned). Park either directly in front of the mall or follow signs toward Cupecoy / Beach Bar. Look out for Danny’s Beach Bar sign and red truck. If using that route, turn left, drive uphill, and park in the designated area. Then descend the stairs beside the bar or walk past roped sections to reach the beach.
Alternatively, from the abandoned mall parking, walk across scrubland and follow worn trails leading toward the sea for approximately 5–10 minutes. Beach will appear below cliff edges.
