- Dog-friendly trail: Many hikers bring dogs. With proper supervision and leashes, it can be a great outing for active pets.
- Shorter hike option available: Entering through Bowen Ranch significantly shortens the hike and makes the experience more manageable for many visitors. So make sure you're ready for that if you want to visit this clothing-optional beach in USA.
The Bad
- Trash and crowd issues: Unfortunately, trash around the creek and pools is a common complaint, especially on weekends. Broken glass, litter, and loud groups can seriously affect the experience.
- Very steep hike out: The hike in feels easy since it is mostly downhill, but the return is tough. The elevation gain and exposed trail make the hike back up exhausting, especially in warm weather.
- Exposed desert trail: There is little to no shade. Water is essential, and many people underestimate how much they will need.
- Not kid-friendly: Nudity is common, the hike is strenuous, and the terrain is rugged. This is not an appropriate destination for children.
- Wildlife and safety concerns: Rattlesnakes are present in the area. Algae makes the pools slippery, and there are reports of glass and sharp debris near the water.
The Naked Truth
Deep Creek Hot Springs can feel incredible or completely ruined depending on when you go. On quiet weekdays, especially in cooler months, it really does feel like a desert escape; steaming pools, relaxed nudity, calm conversations, and people soaking without judgment. Clothing optional isn’t theoretical here; full nudity is normal and long-established, especially in the pools. When it’s peaceful, the experience feels grounding, communal, and genuinely special.
Weekends are a different story. Crowds, loud music, trash, broken glass, and intoxicated groups are common complaints, and the natural magic can disappear fast. The hike out is no joke, the sun is unforgiving, and the setting is not forgiving of careless behavior. If you’re prepared, respectful, and go at the right time, Deep Creek can be unforgettable. If you go unprepared or at peak times, it can feel exhausting and disappointing rather than healing. Definitely a naturist destination in California worth checking out.

Getting There
Deep Creek Hot Springs is located in the San Bernardino Mountains near Hesperia, California, within the Deep Creek area.
By Car: From Los Angeles, drive north on I-15 toward Barstow and exit at Main Street in Hesperia. Continue east on Main Street as it becomes Deep Creek Road. Follow Deep Creek Road until you reach the Bowen Ranch area, which is the most common and direct access point. Enter “Bowen Ranch” in navigation rather than “Deep Creek Hot Springs,” as GPS often misroutes drivers. The final stretch is dusty and uneven, so drive slowly. Bowen Ranch charges a day-use fee for access.
By Foot: From Bowen Ranch, follow the clearly marked trail downhill toward Deep Creek. The hike is roughly two miles and mostly downhill, usually taking 45 to 80 minutes. You must cross the creek to reach the hot spring pools. The hike back out is steep, exposed, and significantly harder, often taking up to two hours. Carry plenty of water and pace yourself.
By Public Transport: There is no public transportation to Deep Creek Hot Springs. Access requires a car followed by a hike.
