Nudity tolerated (discreet at far end, no officially designated zone)

The Good

  • Stunning natural setting: Widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches on St. Barths and even in the world.
  • Soft fine sand and clear water: Ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing. The sandy seabed has very few rocks, and the vibrant water often glows even under cloudy skies. Calm conditions are common, although waves can occasionally be strong.
  • Easy access and ample parking: A large parking area is available directly next to the beach, making access convenient. No long hike required, unlike Colombier Beach. Suitable for families and visitors who prefer straightforward beach entry.
  • Uncrowded compared to similar beaches: While it attracts “the in crowd” and can be popular during peak times, space is rarely an issue. The western end tends to be quieter and more relaxed.
  • Natural shade available: Very limited, but there is a notable large tree near the entrance providing a small spot of relief from the sun. Some driftwood and rock formations also create minimal shaded areas.

The Bad

  • No amenities on-site: No bars, restaurants, shops, lounge chairs, umbrellas, or water stations. Visitors must bring everything; towels, drinks, snacks, and shade if needed.
  • Strong sun exposure: South-facing beach means the sun is directly in front of you throughout most of the day. With nearly no natural shade, sun protection (umbrella, hat, sunscreen) is essential.
  • Floating seaweed and wave tickles: While water is generally very clear, occasional floating seaweeds and tickling sensations are reported in stronger currents. Can be mildly uncomfortable for some swimmers.
  • Strong waves certain times of the year: Swell conditions island-wide can affect Gouverneur. Waves may be higher than usual, making it less suitable for children and requiring extra caution for adults entering or swimming.
  • Occasional anchorage discomfort: Boaters report that while anchoring is possible in sand, waves may cause unsettled conditions. Limited coral and marine life for snorkeling except on the eastern edge.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Gouverneur Beach is not a naturist beach; but it quietly tolerates naturist behavior if you understand the unwritten rules. This is one of the most visually perfect beaches on the island: powder-white sand, luminous water, and a sense of space that’s rare for something so easy to access. Most visitors come clothed, relaxed, and well-behaved, and the atmosphere is upscale but not showy.

Nudity here survives on discretion, not rights. If you walk to the far western end, keep a low profile, and read the room, discreet nude sunbathing or a quick nude swim usually goes unnoticed. Anything more visible, central, or performative will not be welcomed. There’s no signage, no protection, and no guarantees; just quiet tolerance when handled respectfully. Gouverneur rewards subtlety and confidence: arrive early, bring everything, avoid the center of attention, and you can enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean with a rare, understated sense of freedom.

Insider Tip

Arrive early to secure one of the limited natural shade spots, particularly under the large tree near the entrance. The western end of the beach tends to be quieter, and some visitors discreetly sunbathe or swim nude there.

Who's Here

A mix of couples, families, upscale travelers, and occasional naturists discreetly positioned at the far western end. Generally very respectful and well-mannered visitors.

Beach Surface

Fine, white, powder-like sand with minimal pebbles and mostly smooth underwater terrain. Waters are clear but may shift between calm and moderately wavy depending on conditions.

Access Difficulty

Easy: Direct parking next to the beach area with only a short walk across flat sand. No hiking required. The road leading to the beach is steep but paved. Suitable for most vehicles.
