The Good

- Seclusion Factor: This spot stays noticeably less crowded than nearby Cape May beaches. You can find space without trying too hard. It feels like a break from the usual coastal traffic.
- Sunset Exposure: The west-facing shoreline makes it one of the better places in the area to watch the sun go down. The sky opens wide over the bay. Even simple evenings feel memorable here.
- Dog-Friendly Vibe: Many visitors bring their dogs, adding to the casual and local feel of the beach. It is not overly strict or controlled. The atmosphere stays easygoing and open.
- Wildlife Watching: The area is known for bird activity and coastal wildlife, making it interesting beyond just swimming. You may also see horseshoe crabs along the shore. It adds a natural, observational element.
- Free Access: Parking is free and access is open, which is rare compared to more commercial beaches nearby. There are no entry fees or structured systems. It keeps the experience simple.
The Bad
- Mosquito Presence: Bugs can be intense, especially in warmer months or near sunset. It can quickly become uncomfortable without protection. Bug spray is essential.
- Unmaintained Shoreline: The beach is not groomed, so you will encounter debris, shells, and uneven patches. It feels raw rather than polished. Not everyone enjoys that.
- Soft Sand Walk: The walk from the parking area can be tiring due to deep, loose sand. It takes more effort than expected. Carrying gear makes it harder.
- Water Quality Concerns: The bay water can appear less clean due to boat activity and natural movement. It is still usable but not always inviting. Expectations need to be adjusted.
- No Lifeguards: There is no supervision or safety presence on the beach. You are fully responsible for yourself. This may not suit less experienced swimmers.
- Unclear Clothing Norms: Since nudity is unofficial, the mix of visitors can feel inconsistent. Some are comfortable, others are not. This can create a slightly uncertain atmosphere depending on the day.
The Naked Truth
Higbee Beach is a quiet, undeveloped stretch of coastline that feels very different from New Jersey’s busier beach spots.
There are no major facilities or organised beach areas, so expect a much more basic experience. Most people come here for the space, the walking trails and the quieter setting rather than for a traditional beach day with amenities.
It can feel fairly secluded once you move away from the main access points, which is part of the appeal for visitors looking for somewhere less crowded.
This is definitely not as well known as nearby Gunnison Beach, and it has a much less established feel.
If you prefer quieter, more natural beaches and don’t mind giving up facilities and convenience, Higbee Beach is worth knowing about.
Insider Tip
Bring bug spray, water, and food since nothing is available on-site. Wear comfortable footwear for the sandy walk, and consider visiting later in the day for the sunset. Keep things respectful and low-key, especially regarding nudity.

Getting There
Higbee Beach is located in Lower Township, New Jersey, along Delaware Bay near Cape May.
By car or on foot: Drive toward Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area and use the free parking lot. From there, walk along the sandy trails leading to the shoreline, keeping in mind the terrain can be soft and uneven.
By public transport: Public transport access is limited, so reaching the beach without a car can be difficult. The closest option would involve getting to Cape May and using a ride-share or a long walk to reach the area.
