The Good

  • Well-known nude swimming reserve: Kambah Pool is one of Canberra’s most established and clearly divided clothing-optional swimming areas, with signage separating textile and nude zones.
  • Beautiful river setting: Set along the Murrumbidgee River, the reserve features rock pools, forested banks, birdlife, and flowing water that feels far removed from the city.
  • Peaceful during weekdays: On weekdays it’s common to have the area nearly to yourself, creating a calm, meditative atmosphere.
  • Multiple access options: From the car park, the left path leads to the clothed family swimming area, while the right path leads toward the nudist section.
  • Great for swimming and floating: Many visitors bring floatation devices to drift and relax in the slower sections of the river.
  • Close to the city: Despite its wild feel, it’s only a short drive from Canberra, making it ideal for after-work swims or short nature breaks.

The Bad

  • Riverbanks badly eroded: Heavy rains have washed away sections of the banks, leaving steep drop-offs and unstable edges in places.
  • Steep access paths: The descent from the car park is around 200 metres and can feel intimidating, especially after rain.
  • Brown, murky water: Visibility is low, and the riverbed contains large slippery rocks; not everyone feels comfortable swimming here.
  • Snakes present: Particularly in late autumn and warmer months, snakes may be active near rocks and sunny paths.
  • No shade structures: Natural shade exists but is limited, especially in the nude area, sun protection is essential.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Kambah Pool Reserve is a raw river environment, not a polished swimming hole. The beauty lies in its natural bush setting; flowing water, granite rocks, birdsong, and the sense of genuine wilderness just outside Canberra. When conditions are good, it’s an incredible place to swim, sunbathe nude on warm rocks, or simply sit and listen to the river move past.

That said, this is not a resort-style nude beach. The water can be dark, the footing uneven, and recent flooding has dramatically changed the riverbanks. Most regulars come for the atmosphere rather than perfect swimming conditions, and on quiet days the experience can feel deeply peaceful and grounding. This is a rare freshwater naturist experience in Australia and highly recommended!

Insider Tip

If you want the easiest access, take the right-hand road from the car park; it avoids the steepest descent. For families or clothed swimming, take the left path. Bring sturdy footwear, water shoes for the river, and arrive early on hot days.

Who's Here

Local nudists, swimmers, walkers, cyclists, photographers, families (textile side), birdwatchers, and regular Canberra locals. Weekends attract more people; weekdays are often very quiet.

Beach Surface

Large smooth rocks, gravel banks, and muddy riverbed with algae-covered stones. Some flat sunbathing rocks are available, especially in the nude area.

Access Difficulty

Moderate: Easy to reach by car, but access to the water requires a steep walk or uneven track. Not wheelchair accessible.
