Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity is optional (unofficial but widely practiced)
The Good
- Hidden naturist beach with stunning views: Kings Beach is described as magical and surreal, one of the most beautiful nude beaches along the NSW coast. Protected by rocky headlands and lined with pandanus palms, it offers a sense of privacy and natural beauty.
- Laid-back, safe, and welcoming atmosphere: Visitors mention a peaceful vibe where you are free to be naked without judgment. Both couples and solo beachgoers report feeling comfortable and safe. Also noted as gay-friendly.
- Shaded areas available: Despite limited infrastructure, there are shaded spots at the back of the beach, ideal for relaxing away from direct sun.
- Good for swimming and surfing: Clean waves, big surf on good days, and suitable for confident swimmers. Rock pools also offer enjoyable swimming during calm conditions.
- Whale sightings in winter: Those visiting during cooler months may spot whales from the beach, further enhancing the natural experience.
- Secluded with minimal crowds: Difficult access helps keep numbers low. Visitors appreciate the calm, quiet setting, especially outside school holidays and weekends.
The Bad
- Very steep access path: The track down from the car park takes around 10–15 minutes and includes uneven steps. The return climb is challenging and not suitable for visitors with mobility issues.
- Limited parking and early closures: The main car park fills early during busy periods. Some reports indicate it may be closed or under surveillance at times, requiring extra walking from further down the road.
- No amenities on the beach: There are no toilets, no showers, and no food or water sources directly on the beach. Visitors must bring everything with them.
- Unofficial nudity status: While nudity is common and accepted, it is not officially designated. Some textile visitors may not expect it, and occasional uncomfortable reactions have been reported.
- Exposure to wind and limited shade at midday: Although there are some sheltered spots, overall shade can be limited during peak sun hours. The wind can feel cold even in warm weather.
- Birds attempting to take food: Visitors note that local birds occasionally try to steal food, so supplies must be secured.
The Naked Truth
Kings Beach feels like a secret you’re trusted to keep. It’s unofficial, yes - but nudity here isn’t experimental or edgy; it’s simply how the beach works.
Once you make the steep descent, the mood shifts fast: clothes disappear, shoulders drop, and people settle into a quietly confident rhythm of swimming, sunbathing, and minding their own business. The mix of naturists, surfers, and LGBTQ+ visitors creates a relaxed, accepting atmosphere that feels safer than many “official” spots.
But this freedom comes without protection. There’s no legal backing, no facilities, and no easy exit if you’ve misjudged your fitness, timing, or supplies. The climb out is punishing, parking is a gamble, and the occasional textile visitor can look surprised; or uncomfortable, by the nudity. Kings Beach rewards effort and awareness. If you arrive early, bring everything you need, and accept that this is a tolerated space rather than a guaranteed right, it can feel magical. If you expect convenience or certainty, the stairs alone will remind you why it stays so special.
Insider Tip
Follow the Kings Beach Track and head down the stairs, nudity is common once you reach the shoreline. For quieter sunbathing, choose shaded spots toward the back and avoid rock faces due to past erosion and safety concerns.
Who's Here
Naturists, LGBTIQ+ groups, couples, solo travelers, and surfers. Most beachgoers are nude, with a relaxed culture of doing your own thing.
Beach Surface
Soft sand with clear water and rock pools. Sheltered by cliffs and vegetation, giving a secluded coastal feel. No visible seaweed mentioned. Suitable for laying out towels, with some shaded areas available.
Access Difficulty
Moderate to challenging: Approximately a 10–15 minute descent via steps and walking track from the car park. The return climb is steep. Not wheelchair accessible.
