The Good
- Large, scenic swimming lake: Birkensee is a spacious natural lake surrounded by forest, with multiple coves, sandy bays, and grassy sun areas.
- Well-known nudist destination: One of the most popular FKK (Freikörperkultur) lakes in the Nuremberg region, with nudity widely accepted around much of the shoreline.
- Beautiful water conditions: Often clear and algae-free compared to many Bavarian bathing lakes, with good visibility and fish commonly seen near shore.
- Shallow sandy entry: Several areas slope gently into the water, making it suitable for children and relaxed swimming.
- Plenty of space: Even on busy summer days, the lake is large enough to find quieter corners away from crowds.
- Mixed sun and shade: Sunny beaches alternate with shaded forest edges, ideal on hot days.
- Year-round destination: Popular for swimming in summer, hiking and cycling in spring and autumn, and sledding in winter.
- Free access: No entrance fee and free parking, which is rare for lakes near a major city.
The Bad
- Long walk from parking: Depending on the access point, the walk can range from 15 minutes to nearly 3 km through forest paths.
- Uneven terrain: Trails include hills and slopes, which can be difficult for visitors with knee or mobility issues.
- Limited facilities: Toilets and food kiosks are seasonal and located only on one side of the lake.
- Poor signage: There are almost no signs indicating nudist areas, which can surprise first-time visitors.
- Busy on hot days: Summer weekends can become crowded, especially near sandy bays.
- Waste issues at times: Trash bins are limited, and litter appears when visitors do not clean up after themselves.
The Naked Truth
Birkensee is one of those places where nudity is not hidden or restricted; it’s simply part of the landscape. On warm days, you’ll see nude swimmers, sunbathers, walkers, and families sharing the same shoreline naturally. It’s not a party lake and not sexualized; the atmosphere is relaxed, casual, and very traditionally German FKK in spirit.
At the same time, this openness can surprise newcomers. There are no warning signs, no fenced-off nude zone, and no strict separation between textile and non-textile areas. If you’re comfortable with casual nudity and value nature over infrastructure, Birkensee is deeply rewarding; but if you expect organized beaches or resort-style comfort, it may feel too wild and informal. It is a typical FKK location in Germany and highly recommended.
Insider Tip
The back sandy bay is best for families and shallow swimming, while quieter nudist spots are found by walking farther around the shoreline. Autumn and weekday mornings offer the most peaceful experience.
Who's Here
Naturists, swimmers, families, hikers, cyclists, dog walkers, and locals from Nuremberg, Fürth, and Erlangen. Expect a true mix of nude and clothed visitors of all ages.
Beach Surface
Natural shoreline with sandy beaches, grassy areas, and small forest clearings. Some coves are soft sand; others are compact soil or reeds.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: Flat once at the lake, but reaching it requires a forest walk with mild elevation changes.
