The Good
- Natural and unspoiled: Kommos Beach, near Matala in southern Crete, stretches for several kilometers of soft golden sand framed by dunes and distant cliffs. Once the port of ancient Phaistos, it still feels wild and untamed, a true escape from crowded resort beaches.
- Ample space and privacy: Even in peak summer, the beach rarely feels full. You can always find a quiet area, especially near the cliffs at the southern end where naturists usually gather.
- Rich history and wildlife: Beyond its archaeological importance, Kommos is a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Visitors often see fenced nesting zones marked for protection, adding a sense of reverence and connection with nature.
- Accessible yet peaceful: This Greece naturist beach is just a short drive from nearby villages like Kalamaki and Pitsidia, with convenient parking and simple food options nearby; including a small food truck serving cold drinks and Cretan snacks.
- Sunset views: Evenings here are magical, with the sun dipping into the Libyan Sea and lighting up the sand in shades of gold and red.
The Bad
- Strong winds: The southern coast of Crete is notoriously windy. Sand can sting during gusty days, so wind protection or timing your visit early in the morning helps.
- No permanent shade: There are no umbrellas or sunbeds now due to turtle conservation efforts, so you’ll need to bring your own.
- Rocks in the shallows: The sandy entry turns to flat stone plates underwater. Aqua shoes are strongly recommended.
- Limited facilities: Aside from a nearby taverna and a food truck, there are no toilets, lifeguards, or rental services.
- Off-road access: The last section of the road is gravel - easy to manage with care, but dusty and uneven.
The Naked Truth
Kommos is one of the most famous naturist beaches in Crete, known for its relaxed and respectful atmosphere. The southern and middle sections are frequented by nude sunbathers, while the northern part near the archaeological site remains textile-friendly. There’s also a small gay section near the center.
Its mix of history, tranquility, and freedom makes it special; a place where ruins meet dunes and sea turtles share the same sands as sunbathers. Despite the wind and lack of amenities, it remains one of Crete’s most beautiful, authentic naturist spots.
Insider Tip
Bring your own shade, food, and plenty of water. Park near the taverna and walk a few hundred meters south to the naturist zone. Stay late for the sunset - it’s among the best on the island.

Getting There
Kommos Beach lies about 67 km southwest of Heraklion and 2 km north of Matala. Drive via Moires toward Pitsidia, then follow signs to Kommos Beach. Bus service is seasonal, so driving or taxi is best. If you are coming from Myrthianos, which most tourists are, going to the Kommos Beach might mean a long drive or commute.
By bus: From Myrthianos proper, ride a bus in Rethymnon - Bus Station going to Heraklion. Walk for about two minutes to get to the central bus station and ride the Matala bus going to Kommos. From hopping off the bus, you need to walk for about 28 - 30 minutes before reaching the beach.
