OPTIONAL

Nudity is optional but expected (designated naturist section)

The Good

  • Powerful Atlantic energy: Wide open coastline with dramatic waves, warm water in season, and a raw, invigorating surf atmosphere. The constant sound of crashing waves gives the beach real presence.
  • Perfect wave playground: Popular with surfers and bodyboarders; older kids and strong swimmers enjoy riding the surf. Great spot to watch evening surf sessions. It's truly one of the best beaches in France.
  • Expansive & scenic: Long stretch of sand backed by pine forest and dunes. Views are wide, sunsets are exceptional, and the feel is wild and natural.
  • Mixed-use beach with space to spread out: While family-friendly areas exist, the beach is large enough that the naturist section feels separate and relaxed, especially away from main access points.

The Bad

  • Strong waves & currents: Water is rough and noisy and can push swimmers hard. Not safe for young kids or non-swimmers; most visitors play in the shallows rather than fully swim.
  • Parking pressure: Free parking exists but fills fast by midday in summer. Cars often line the road and walks can be long. Do not leave valuables visible.
  • Narrow at high tide: The beach shrinks when the tide rises, which can make popular sections feel crowded during peak summer hours.
  • Sand fleas at dusk: Noticeable near the tide line. Sunset is stunning, but sitting above the damp sand helps avoid bites.
  • Variable comfort underfoot: Pebbles or driftwood near some entrances, with smoother sand farther along. No showers; toilets are basic.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

La Grande Plage is a classic west-coast Atlantic beach: windy, energetic, and visually striking, with a clearly established naturist section alongside traditional family and surf areas. Nudity is practiced discreetly and typically farther from the main access points and lifeguard zones.

This is not a secluded cove, but the beach is long enough that everyone tends to find their place. Expect a lively, mixed crowd in peak season and a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere in the mornings and evenings. Respect and spatial awareness are key here.

Insider Tip

Arrive before late morning in summer, as parking becomes chaotic quickly. If visiting the naturist section, walk farther down the beach away from main entrances. For swimming, stay where lifeguards are posted and keep to waist-deep water. Bring layers for sunset and sit above the damp band to avoid sand fleas.

Who's Here

Surfers, bodyboarders, active families, naturists, beach walkers, locals, summer visitors, and cyclists. Friendly and sporty crowd with clear informal zoning along the shoreline.

Beach Surface

Fine sand with occasional pebbly patches near access points, wide dunes and pine backdrop, rolling surf, cross-currents, and some driftwood. Warm water in summer; sand fleas near dusk.

Access Difficulty

Easy to moderate: Flat approach with a sandy walk from parking areas. Dedicated cycle paths nearby. Can feel crowded at midday in peak summer.
