The Good
- One of the most beautiful beaches on Martha’s Vineyard: Lucy Vincent Beach is consistently described as magical. Towering clay cliffs, sculpted rock formations, and a wide stretch of soft sand make it visually unforgettable.
- Incredible off-season experience: Outside the summer season, the beach opens to non-residents and can feel almost completely empty. Spring and fall visits often mean long, quiet walks with uninterrupted ocean views.
- Excellent for walking and beachcombing: This is a beach made for long walks, slow exploration, and admiring rocks shaped by erosion. Many visitors leave their shoes at the entrance and walk barefoot for miles.
- Wildlife sightings: Seals are often spotted offshore, and some visitors have even seen whales feeding at a distance. The open ocean setting feels alive and dynamic.
- Calming, almost spiritual atmosphere: Many people describe Lucy Vincent as deeply grounding and peaceful. Even when the beach has changed due to erosion, the sense of calm remains.
The Bad
- Strict access restrictions in summer: From July through early September, Lucy Vincent is residents-only. Non-residents cannot purchase passes, and enforcement is strict. Visitors are regularly turned away.
- Can feel unwelcoming in season: Signage and staff can be blunt about access rules, which some visitors find discouraging or off-putting.
- Exposed to open ocean conditions: Waves can be large and powerful depending on weather. Swimming requires caution.
- Erosion has changed the beach: Cliff collapses and shoreline changes have altered the landscape over the years. Some rock formations may disappear over time.
- Occasional litter: Despite controlled access, cigarette butts and small trash are sometimes present.
The Naked Truth
Lucy Vincent Beach is stunning; but it’s also controlled and conditional. When you’re allowed in (mainly off-season), it’s one of the most peaceful, powerful beaches on Martha’s Vineyard: huge sky, sculpted cliffs, long empty walks, and real solitude. That’s when the magic happens.
In summer, access rules dominate everything. If you’re not a Chilmark resident or guest, you simply won’t get in, no exceptions, no charm offensive. Nudity is common in the upper section of the beach in summer; while a few people also discreetly go nude in very quiet off-season moments. This beach is about awe and atmosphere, along with freedom of dress at certain times. If you come expecting openness year-round, you’ll be frustrated. If you time it right, it’s unforgettable and ranks as one of the top naturist beaches on the east coast of the US.
Insider Tip
If you are not a Chilmark resident, plan your visit for April, May, September, or October. This is when Lucy Vincent truly shines - it is warmest and is accessible to everyone.
Who's Here
In the off-season, mostly walkers, photographers, dog owners, and quiet nude beach lovers. In summer, primarily Chilmark residents and their guests.
Beach Surface
Wide soft sand mixed with rounded rocks and dramatic stone formations. The beach is expansive and comfortable for long walks.
Access Difficulty
Easy once permitted: The walk from parking to sand is short, but access depends entirely on season and permit status.
