Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity is optional (unofficial, discreet areas)
The Good
- Wide, windswept, and uncrowded: Miacomet Beach is one of the quieter south shore beaches on Nantucket. Even on good weather days, it often feels open and peaceful, with long stretches of sand and very few people.
- Great for walking, shells, and solitude: The beach is ideal for long walks, beachcombing, and simply being near the ocean without distractions. Many visitors mention finding shells and enjoying the sense of space.
- Strong, energetic surf: Waves here are typically larger than at north shore beaches, making it fun for body surfing and watching the surf roll in. The atmosphere feels wild and elemental.
- Lifeguards (seasonal): When staffed, lifeguards are usually on duty until around 5 PM, adding a layer of safety in an otherwise remote-feeling spot.
- Pond and ocean in one place: Nearby Miacomet Pond offers a calm alternative, perfect for kids, kayaking, canoeing, or birdwatching, while others enjoy the ocean just steps away.
The Bad
- Not ideal for young swimmers: The surf can be rough, with rip currents, steep drop-offs, and strong waves, especially on windy days.
- Very limited amenities: Aside from porta potties, there are no food vendors, no rentals, and no services. You must bring everything with you.
- Parking can be tricky: The parking area is limited and can fill up, especially as the beach grows more popular.
- Sharp debris in the sand: Some visitors report shells or sharp objects underfoot, so water shoes can be helpful.
- Wind exposure: This beach is often windy, which can make swimming less appealing but adds to its dramatic feel.
The Naked Truth
Miacomet is quiet, windy, and spacious; great if you want room to breathe and long walks without the crowd energy. It’s not a classic “easy swim” beach; the surf can be rough and the wind constant. Nudity isn’t widespread, but a few people go discreetly clothing-optional in far, empty stretches, just don’t expect a scene or community vibe. If the ocean’s too wild, Miacomet Pond right next door saves the day with calm water.
Insider Tip
If the ocean feels too rough, head over to Miacomet Pond instead. You still get beautiful scenery and calm water without leaving the area.
Who's Here
A mix of walkers, dog owners, surfers, couples, birdwatchers, and locals seeking space. Clothing-optional use occurs quietly in more secluded sections.
Beach Surface
Mostly fine sand, with shells and occasional sharp fragments. The shoreline is wide and firm, ideal for walking.
Access Difficulty
Easy: Straightforward access by car, bike, or foot once you reach the end of Miacomet Road.

Getting There
Miacomet Beach is located at the end of Miacomet Road on Nantucket’s south shore.
By Car: From Nantucket Town, drive west toward Miacomet and continue straight until the road ends at the parking lot near the pond and trailhead.
By Bike or Foot: Cycling from town is a popular option, though the route can be bumpy, especially near the end, so a hybrid or off-road bike is recommended. Walkers and cyclists follow the same path as cars down Miacomet Road, then continue on foot via the trail to reach the beach.
By Public Transport: There is no direct public transport to Miacomet Beach. Visitors typically use car rentals, taxis, or bicycles to reach the end of Miacomet Road, then walk the final stretch to the shoreline.
