Nudity Policy

OPTIONAL

Nudity is optional

The Good

  • Secluded natural setting: Surrounded by bushland and mountain views, with eagles and otters often spotted nearby.
  • Spacious sandy areas: When river levels are low, sandbars appear with tons of room to spread out.
  • Naturist-friendly atmosphere: Nudity is quietly tolerated and generally respected by locals and rangers.
  • Inclusive vibe: Welcoming to all, including LGBTQ+ visitors—especially at the western end.
  • Close to town: Just a short drive from downtown Kamloops, yet it feels totally removed.

The Bad

  • Seasonal flooding: River levels rise in spring and early summer, sometimes wiping out the beach.
  • No facilities: No toilets, water fountains, or bins—bring everything you need and pack it out.
  • Hot sand and glass hazards: Wear sandals or water shoes to avoid burns or sharp objects.
  • Unleashed dogs: It's an official off-leash dog park, which can be a downside for some.
  • Occasional sketchy activity: Remote location means you might see the odd lurker—stay near others and don’t leave valuables in the car.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Mission Flats is the only nude-friendly beach in Kamloops, and it's got a loyal local crowd that includes everyone from older naturists to curious students. It’s not an “official” nude beach in the legal sense, but it’s well known and accepted by the city. While the surrounding pulp mill and treatment plant don’t scream paradise, the riverfront sandbars and mountain backdrop quickly make you forget that. Just be aware: it’s a wild, unmanaged spot. No lifeguards, no restrooms, and yes—sometimes a few people who are not there for the same naturist values. Still, if you're cautious and stick to the main areas, it's a great place to ditch your clothes and soak up the sun.

Our Visit

We were passing through Kamloops during a bit of a heatwave and figured we’d try and find a spot to get our gear off and cool down. A local tipped us off about Mission Flats—said it was kinda gritty but beautiful—and they were spot on. The drive in is pretty industrial, past a treatment plant and some mill stuff, but don’t let that fool you. Once you park and walk in, it honestly feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Wide open river, big sky, and not a single sign or lifeguard tower in sight.

We followed a dusty little trail down to the water and found a quiet patch of sand where a few others had already set up. Everyone seemed to be doing their own thing—mostly older folks, some couples—and most were nude, which made us feel fine about ditching our clothes too. It felt easy, relaxed, zero pressure.

Compared to other British Columbia nude beaches, this one’s got a real locals-only vibe. It's not polished or curated, and that’s kind of what makes it special. We’ve been to Nipple Point Beach in Salmon Arm before—which is more hidden and low-key—but Mission Flats has its own charm. It’s raw and honest. No amenities, no frills. Just river, sand, and space to breathe.

Swimming’s a bit hit-and-miss. The current can be strong, and with all the warnings about water levels changing through spring and early summer, we mostly just waded in to cool down. Still felt amazing. Just don’t expect turquoise lake water or calm waves—this is a river, and it acts like one.

Also, heads up: it’s an off-leash dog area, so you’ll likely have a pup or two come say hello. We didn’t mind at all. Just added to the casual, anything-goes vibe.

If you’re after an unfiltered, no-bs place to lay out naked and chill with zero expectations, this is it. Just don’t come expecting toilets or a snack bar. Pack your own water, don’t leave valuables in the car, and be smart about when you go—we wouldn’t hang out here after dark.

But for what it is? We loved it. We’ll be back next time we’re anywhere near Kamloops.

Getting There

Mission Flats Nude Beach sits just west of downtown Kamloops, tucked along the Thompson River. While it’s surrounded by some light industrial areas, the moment you’re riverside, you’ll feel worlds away. Access is simple if you’ve got a car, but there’s no public transport directly to the beach.

By Car:
From central Kamloops, head west on Mission Flats Road. Keep driving past the Weyerhaeuser pulp mill and the large water treatment plant on your left. As soon as you pass the plant, look for roadside parking on your right (river side), or you can use a small gravel lot across the road. Once parked, follow one of the bush trails that wind down to the water—it’s just a few minutes on foot.

By Public Transport:
There’s no public transit that runs directly to Mission Flats. If you don’t have a car, your best bet is a taxi or rideshare from Kamloops.

On Foot/Bike:
It’s possible to cycle from downtown if you’re up for a ride. The roads are flat and there’s minimal traffic most of the way, but no official bike lanes. Once you reach the beach, trails crisscross the area, and the sandbars stretch out beautifully when the water is low.

Recommended Accommodation

Kamloops offers a surprisingly wide range of accommodations, from resorts to affordable motels and campgrounds. However, there are no clothing-optional options available.
