Nudity Policy

OPTIONAL

Nudity is optional further down the beach

The Good

  • Scenic and unique: The beach stretches below the famous multicolored Aquinnah Cliffs, giving it one of the most dramatic backdrops on Martha’s Vineyard. The views are especially striking at sunset, when the cliffs glow red and gold.
  • Freedom and comfort: A section further down the beach, often called Zack’s Beach, is clothing-optional. It’s known for being calm, friendly, and judgment-free.
  • Peaceful vibe: The beach feels natural and uncommercialized, with no built-up development and plenty of space to spread out.
  • Simple access: From the parking area near Gay Head Lighthouse, it’s about a 10–15 minute walk down a sandy trail through the dunes.
  • Attractions nearby: After your beach visit, you can explore the Gay Head Lighthouse, shops, and viewing decks above the cliffs

The Bad

  • No facilities on the beach: No restrooms, lifeguards, or food vendors once you’re down by the water, you’ll need to bring everything with you.
  • Limited parking: The small lot fills quickly in summer; arrive early or plan for a bit of a walk.
  • Mixed crowds: The clothing-optional zone is further down the shoreline, but casual visitors sometimes wander through out of curiosity.
  • Variable conditions: Sand can be coarse with shells and stones, and the surf can get rough depending on weather.
  • Long trip from other towns: Aquinnah is at the far western tip of the island, about 40 minutes from Oak Bluffs by car or bus.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Moshup Beach is one of those rare places where wild scenery and a laid-back naturist spirit meet. The cliffs tower behind you, the Atlantic stretches endlessly ahead, and the beach has a free, open feel that’s hard to find elsewhere on the island.

Nudity is accepted but limited to the more remote stretch past the main access point, so it’s easy for everyone to find their comfort zone.

It’s not a serviced beach, so it’s best for visitors who prefer simplicity and come prepared. The walk down is short but sandy and uphill on the way back. Moshup Beach is regularly referred to as one of the best naturist beaches on the east coast of the US.

Insider Tip

Walk to the right once you reach the beach to find the clothing-optional area. Bring water, snacks, and a sunshade. Stay for sunset, it’s one of the most beautiful on the island.

Who's Here

A friendly, respectful mix of naturists and casual beachgoers; locals, couples, and travelers seeking quiet.

Beach Surface

Sandy with pebbles and shells; wide and open with rolling Atlantic waves.

Access Difficulty

Moderate: 10–15 minute sandy walk from the parking area at Aquinnah Overlook.

Getting There

Moshup Beach sits at the far western tip of Martha’s Vineyard in Aquinnah (formerly Gay Head). It takes a bit of effort to reach, but that journey is part of what keeps this beach peaceful and uncrowded.

By Ferry and Bus:
Take the Steamship Authority ferry from Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard, arriving at either Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs. From there, hop on the VTA Route 5 bus toward Aquinnah / Gay Head - it’s a scenic ride that winds through classic Vineyard countryside and small island towns. Once you reach Aquinnah, it’s a short walk from the Gay Head Cliffs parking area down a sandy path to the beach below.

By Car:
If you’re driving around the island, follow signs toward Aquinnah and park in the paid lot near the Gay Head Lighthouse (usually around $15–$20 per day). From there, walk past the small row of shops and food stands, then take the well-marked path down the hill to the shoreline. It’s about a 5–10 minute walk with beautiful views of the cliffs along the way.
