Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity is optional. Beach is officially designated as naturist.
The Good
- South Africa’s only official nude beach: Mpenjati was formally designated in 2014, making it the first and only government-recognised nudist beach in South Africa.
- Peaceful and uncrowded: Even on sunny days, the beach is often quiet, providing a safe and relaxed space for naturists.
- Natural setting: Part of Mpenjati Nature Reserve, the beach is surrounded by dunes, lagoon, and forest; ideal for picnics, nature walks, and spotting wildlife like the blue duiker.
- Respectful culture: Governed by a naturist code of conduct; no photography without consent, no lewd behavior, and mutual respect among all visitors.
- Free to visit: There’s no entrance fee, and the area remains well-maintained under Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
The Bad
- Limited access: No public transport options; reaching the beach requires a car and a two-hour drive from Durban (since most visitors stay there for AirBnB and accommodation).
- Trail conditions: The path through the reserve is marked but may flood near the lagoon, especially after rain or high tide.
- Few amenities: No restaurants or shops nearby;visitors must bring their own water, snacks, and shade.
- Past controversy: The official nudist status was initially met with public backlash, but the beach remains legal and open.
The Naked Truth
Mpenjati Beach is a quiet, nature-rich retreat rather than a busy tourist beach. It’s one of the few places in Africa where naturism is fully legal, offering a calm, respectful, and scenic space to enjoy the outdoors.
Visitors who come prepared will find a peaceful stretch of coast framed by forest and lagoon - a reminder of how simple and restorative a day by the sea can be.
Insider Tip
Bring a picnic basket and enjoy a spot near the lagoon. Visit at low tide to explore fossilized shells along the shore.
Who's Here
Naturists, couples, birdwatchers, and day-trippers from Durban or Margate.
Beach Surface
Soft sand with nearby lagoon; occasional seaweed depending on season.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: paved road to the reserve, then a short marked trail through vegetation; may require detour if flooded
