The Good
- Smoky Cape setting: North Smoky Beach lies beneath Smoky Cape, with dramatic headlands and the historic lighthouse area above. The beach feels properly separated from the busier parts of the South West Rocks coastline.
- Golden sand: Unlike a rocky swimming hole or small cove, this is a long stretch of clean golden sand framed by rugged coastal vegetation. There is enough open shoreline to make the place feel spacious and uncrowded.
- Jack Perkins track: Access through the Jack Perkins Walking Track adds to the sense of arrival. The descent takes you away from the lookout and down toward a coastline that feels noticeably wilder.
- Captain Cook's Lookout views: Before heading down, the lookout gives you a broad view over North Smoky Beach and the coastline around Smoky Cape. It is one of the easiest ways to appreciate just how isolated the beach is.
- No built-up beachfront: There are no cafés, holiday apartments or commercial beach facilities lining the sand. The experience is dominated by ocean, bushland and the rocky shape of the headland.
- A genuine escape: North Smoky attracts walkers, anglers, divers and people looking for somewhere quieter than the main beaches around South West Rocks. Its appeal comes from being slightly inconvenient to reach.
The Bad
- Not an established naturist beach: North Smoky Beach does not have official designation or a widely documented reputation as a public naturist beach. Any clothing-optional use should therefore be treated as informal rather than guaranteed.
- The climb back: Walking down is easier than returning to the lookout. The uphill section can feel demanding after several hours on the beach, especially in warm weather.
- No facilities: There are no toilets, food outlets, showers or lifeguards on the beach itself. You need to arrive prepared and take everything back with you.
- Exposed conditions: The ocean can be rough, with strong currents and changing surf conditions. There is no patrolled swimming area here.
- Bush track hazards: The access track passes through natural bushland where snakes can be encountered during warmer months. Staying alert and wearing suitable footwear makes sense.
The Naked Truth
North Smoky Beach is a bit of a hidden gem on the NSW Mid North Coast, and easily one of the most picturesque clothing-optional beaches we've come across in this part of Australia.
We visited while exploring the coastline around South West Rocks, and the setting really is spectacular. From near Smoky Cape Lighthouse, you get an incredible view of the beach tucked beneath the headland, with golden sand, turquoise water and thick bushland surrounding it. It's the sort of place that makes you want to get down there immediately!
Getting there requires a little effort. The Jack Perkins walking track takes you down through the national park, and while it's only a relatively short walk, it's steep. Just remember that whatever you carry down, you'll be carrying back up again!
Unlike some of the more established nude beaches in NSW, North Smoky doesn't have a big naturist community or any official nude beach designation. Clothing-optional use is more of a local tradition, so you may encounter a mix of nude and clothed beachgoers. It's worth keeping that in mind, particularly if you're visiting for the first time.
There's also no lifeguard, no facilities on the sand and the surf can get rough. Bring everything you need and be sensible about swimming.
For us, North Smoky's biggest attraction is its natural beauty and isolation. It's not the sort of place to visit if you're looking for a busy, social nude beach experience. But if you love discovering beautiful, relatively untouched stretches of Australian coastline where you can potentially enjoy some naked time, it's absolutely worth exploring. Just be prepared to work a little for it!
Insider Tip
Start early in the morning while the track is cooler and the beach is quieter, and bring plenty of water, food, sun protection, sturdy walking shoes and a bag for rubbish. Check surf conditions before swimming, respect the national park environment and remember that this is not an officially designated naturist beach.
Who's Here
Most visitors are walkers, anglers, divers and independent beachgoers who do not mind a bush track in exchange for a quieter stretch of coast.
Beach Surface
The shoreline is mainly soft golden sand, backed by coastal vegetation and bordered by rugged rocky headlands at either end.
Access Difficulty
Moderate - the walk down via the Jack Perkins Walking Track is manageable, but the uphill return to Captain Cook's Lookout requires a reasonable level of fitness.

North Smoky Beach might just be one of the most beautiful nude beaches we've visited in Australia! Located on the NSW Mid North Coast, near South West Rocks, this spectacular stretch of golden sand is a fair drive from Sydney, but we reckon it's absolutely worth the trip. We visited on a weekday and were blown away by just how beautiful and quiet it was. This is quintessential Australia at its best!

When we arrived, there were only about five people on the entire beach, including a few people fishing. Compared to some of the busier nude beaches in NSW, North Smoky feels incredibly remote. There's no development, no crowds and nothing but beautiful golden sand, the Pacific Ocean and lush green bushland. It's hard to believe places like this still exist!
Getting to the beach is part of the adventure. From near Smoky Cape Lighthouse, the Jack Perkins walking track takes you down through the national park to the sand. It's roughly an 800-metre walk downhill, which took us around 10–15 minutes. We found the walk down surprisingly easy, although we both joked that the return journey would be a completely different story! It's fairly steep in places, particularly when you're walking back uphill in the summer heat.
One thing that made us laugh was the signage along the walking track. We weren't entirely sure whether we'd found the right beach or if people actually went naked here. Thankfully, a couple of handwritten signs, courtesy of someone with a Sharpie, reassured us we were heading in the right direction! Nothing particularly official, but we appreciated the effort.
Despite the overcast weather during our visit, it was absolutely stinking hot. We couldn't wait to strip off and get into the ocean. The water initially felt a little chilly, but once we were in, it was incredibly refreshing. We were also pleasantly surprised by how calm and gentle the water was that day. Megan, who isn't experienced with ocean waves particularly appreciated the conditions! Keep in mind that this is an unpatrolled ocean beach, and conditions can change significantly.
Another thing we loved was the area behind the beach. Thick green vegetation provides some natural shade, meaning you can escape the direct sunshine without needing to haul a beach umbrella down the walking track. The contrast between the golden sand, green trees and blue ocean is stunning. There's something about being surrounded by so much nature that makes getting naked here feel completely natural.
North Smoky isn't an officially designated nude beach, although it has a long history of clothing-optional use. You might encounter a mix of nude sunbathers, fishermen and other visitors. During our midweek visit, there were so few people around that finding a private spot was certainly not an issue. If you're looking for a social naturist experience, somewhere like Cobblers Beach in Sydney might be a better choice. North Smoky is all about the natural surroundings and the opportunity to enjoy some peace and quiet.
There are no facilities or lifeguards on the beach, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen and anything else you'll need. There are facilities up near the lookout, but once you're down on the sand, you're on your own. There is also no mobile phone reception from the beach. We'd also recommend wearing decent shoes for the walk, particularly for the uphill return.
We absolutely loved North Smoky Beach. In fact, we gave it five bums out of five during our visit! The scenery, isolation and incredible natural surroundings make this one of our favourite clothing-optional beaches outside Sydney. If you're travelling along the NSW coast, we'd highly recommend making the detour. It's a little out of the way, but that's precisely what makes it so special.

Getting There
North Smoky Beach is located below Smoky Cape in Hat Head National Park near Arakoon and South West Rocks on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia.
By car or on foot: Drive toward Smoky Cape Lighthouse and Captain Cook's Lookout in Hat Head National Park. Park near the lookout and follow the Jack Perkins Walking Track down the side of the headland toward North Smoky Beach. The walk downhill is relatively straightforward, but allow enough energy for the climb back.
By public transport: There is no reliable public transport service that takes visitors directly to Captain Cook's Lookout or the North Smoky Beach trail access. A private vehicle is the most practical option for reaching the trailhead.
