The Good
- Secluded black-sand setting: Ototoka Beach lies hidden at the end of a gravel road west of Pākaraka, rewarding visitors with sweeping views of cliffs, surf, and volcanic black sand. It’s quiet, atmospheric, and rarely crowded - making it perfect for naturists.
- Waterfall on the beach: A small waterfall drops directly onto the sand, modest in height, but unique and photogenic, especially at high tide when you must cross its stream to reach the main beach.
- Natural playground: Kids and beachcombers love the driftwood, stones, and shells scattered everywhere. Visitors often describe “treasure-hunting” along the tideline.
- Peaceful and wild: Even in winter, it keeps its rugged charm. The isolation makes it perfect for a contemplative walk or picnic away from the bustle of Whanganui.
- Scenic lookout: The cliffs above the beach offer panoramic views of the coastline; it’s a favourite for photographers during sunset.
The Bad
- Gravel access road: The final kilometres of Ototoka Beach Road are unsealed. A normal car can make it, but drive slowly, especially after rain.
- No facilities: There are no toilets, showers, cafés, or lifeguards, come prepared and self-sufficient.
- Occasional debris: Past dumping (including old car parts) has been mostly cleared, though driftwood still dominates parts of the beach.
- Strong surf and currents: Swimming conditions can vary; it’s best for wading or quick dips rather than long swims.
- Limited signage: Apart from a small roadside sign on SH3, the turn-off is easy to miss, and GPS coverage may drop near the coast.
The Naked Truth
Ototoka Beach is the kind of place that feels undiscovered even when you’re standing on it. The black sand, gentle waterfall, and solitude make it one of the Whanganui region’s best low-key gems.
There’s no commercial development, and nature completely takes over; wind, waves, and wide horizons. The beach has a slightly wild edge: beautiful but untamed. It’s ideal for those seeking quiet reflection, photography, or an off-the-beaten-path picnic spot, not for full-day swimming or sun-lounger comfort.
Insider Tip
Come at low tide for the widest stretch of sand and to reach both sides of the waterfall easily. Bring sturdy shoes if you plan to explore the cliffs or driftwood. Sunrise and sunset light are exceptional for photos.
