The Good
- Endless stretch of sand: Papamoa Beach runs for kilometres along the Bay of Plenty coast; wide, soft, and clean, with space for everyone even on busy weekends.
- Great for swimming and surfing: The waves are consistent but manageable, perfect for swimmers, bodyboarders, and casual surfers. Lifeguards patrol the main sections in summer, adding safety for families.
- Family-friendly amenities: Picnic tables, boardwalks, showers, and viewing platforms make it easy to spend the whole day here. There’s also a holiday park right by the sand for overnight stays.
- Relaxed local vibe: Compared to nearby Mount Maunganui nude beach spots, Papamoa is quieter and more laid-back. Locals describe it as “like coming home”; friendly people, easy access, and a calm atmosphere.
- Easy access and nearby conveniences: Multiple entry points along Papamoa Beach Road, plus nearby shops, cafés, and the Fashion Island retail area make it convenient without feeling overdeveloped.
- Beautiful sunrise and sunset views: With its east-facing shoreline, mornings are golden, and the late-day glow over the dunes feels peaceful and open.
The Bad
- Limited shade: There are no trees or shelters on the beach — bring umbrellas or sunshades, as the white sand reflects sunlight strongly.
- Steep water drop-off: The seabed dips quickly, and waves can surprise swimmers near shore; children need close supervision.
- Busy weekends: On sunny days, especially in summer, parking can fill up quickly. With busy crowds lots of textiles will walk through the naturist area.
- Occasional strong surf: Conditions can shift with wind and tide; stick near patrolled zones when swimming.
- Commercial development nearby: While the beach itself stays natural, the surrounding area is growing, bringing more traffic and weekend crowds.
The Naked Truth
Papamoa Beach is where the Bay of Plenty’s easygoing spirit shines. It’s clean, spacious, and scenic - a place for families, couples, and surfers alike. Unlike its neighbour Mount Maunganui, it feels more genuine and less built-up, yet still has all the conveniences within minutes. A segment of beach between Omanu Beach community and Papamoa Beach community is popular with naturists.
Papamoa is one of the most easily accessible nude beaches in New Zealand. A coastal road runs alongside the beach, but the beach is blocked from public view by sand dunes.
The combination of wide sands, safe swimming areas, and great cafés nearby makes it one of New Zealand’s most loved coastal destinations. Whether you’re chasing waves, sunrise light, or a quiet beach walk, Papamoa delivers it effortlessly.
Insider Tip
Arrive early to secure parking near the surf club or one of the beach access boardwalks. Bring shade gear, sunscreen, and cash for the coffee carts that often set up near the main access points. For quieter stretches, head a few kilometres east toward Pukehina Beach.
Who's Here
Families, surfers, walkers, and locals catching up for coffee or evening strolls; also campers from the nearby Tasman Holiday Park. The beach usually draws 15 to 20 naturists on weekdays, with larger weekend crowds.
Beach Surface
Fine golden-white sand, soft and expansive, with low dunes and grassy edges.
Access Difficulty
Easy - flat terrain and paved parking areas; some mobility-friendly boardwalk access points.
