Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity optional in some areas
The Good
- Wide sandy shoreline: Peka Peka Beach offers a long stretch of sand backed by dunes, making it ideal for long walks, playing beach games, or relaxing away from crowds.
- Great for families and casual beach-days: Many reviews note that the water is reasonably warm (for New Zealand) and the waves moderate, making it suitable for families and swimmers.
- Scenic setting: Rows of dune behind the beach, drift-wood scatter, views over Kapiti Island; gives the place a wild, natural feel.
- Custom nudist usage at north end: Peka Peka is among the first beaches north of Wellington where “skin-dipping is known to occur,” particularly at the north end access via Te Hapua Rd.
- Accessible yet quiet: Close enough to SH1 and the Kāpiti region for a short visit, but often much quieter than more popular beaches.
The Bad
- Strong wind and surf exposure: Some reviews note that wind can make it less comfortable, and access by vehicle onto the sand can be tricky due to drift-wood and uneven ground.
- Vehicles allowed on beach: Policy allowing driving onto parts of the sand has been criticised by visitors seeking peace and no motor-traffic.
- Unmarked nudist zones: While nudity is tolerated in some parts, there’s no formal designation or signage; this can lead to awkwardness or mismatched expectations.
- Minimal amenities: Like many naturist beaches in New Zealand, you’ll need to bring everything; shade, water, snacks - and be prepared for lesser infrastructure.
- Mixed visitor behaviour: As noted by some reviewers, scenes of inappropriate or unexpected behaviour (e.g., sexual behaviour near dunes) have been reported; as always with less regulated beaches, use awareness and discretion.
The Naked Truth
Peka Peka Beach is a gem on the Kāpiti Coast; a big sky, long beach, natural dunes, and fewer crowds than many New Zealand beaches. If you’re after a relaxed beach day, a walk along the sand, or even a bit of naturist-friendly space, it ticks a lot of boxes. However, the naturist component is informal, so you’ll want to scout the north-end for more privacy and know that norms can shift.
The freedom to be semi-nude spots exists in practice (“nudity where known to occur” is legal in NZ) but it’s not guaranteed or managed. If you go, plan ahead (food, shade, wind) and choose a quieter section if nudity is your aim.
Insider Tip
For maximum privacy and naturist-friendly stretch, head to the northern access (Te Hapua Rd end) and walk a bit away from the vehicle access. Bring a mat or towel, find a wind-sheltered dune behind the sand, and arrive earlier or later in the day to avoid vehicle traffic.
Who's Here
Families, walkers, surfers, beach-goers seeking a quieter spot, and naturists or skinny-dippers using the less trafficked north end.
Beach Surface
Fine to coarse sand, backed by dunes; some driftwood along high tide line; vehicles may drive on parts of sand when permitted.
Access Difficulty
Easy - drive off SH1, park, short walk. Note: vehicle access onto sand may require care; wind and tide influence comfort
