The Good

  • Beautiful river setting: The Spokane River runs directly through the park, with rocky shoreline sections, calm pools, and scenic forest views.
  • Easy access to nature: Trails are short and straightforward, making it simple to reach the water without a long hike.
  • Wildlife presence: Birds, deer, and other wildlife are commonly seen despite the park’s proximity to the city. Moose are occasionally spotted and if seen you should keep a wide distance from them.
  • Relaxed local hangout: Many visitors come to swim, sunbathe, float, or simply sit by the water, especially during summer.
  • Historic counterculture vibe: The area has a long reputation as a free-spirited gathering spot dating back decades.
  • Good for river recreation: Tubing, wading, and lounging on the rocks are popular when water levels are safe.

The Bad

  • Safety concerns reported: Some visitors mention suspicious activity, theft risks in the parking lot, or uncomfortable encounters.
  • Homeless encampments present: Camps are sometimes visible in parts of the park, which may affect comfort for some visitors.
  • Not ideal for families: Due to the social environment and occasional nudity, it may not feel family-friendly.
  • No facilities: There are no toilets, food vendors, or services directly within the main river access areas.
  • River hazards: Currents can be strong depending on season and snowmelt, and rocks can be slippery underwater.
  • Fire and drought impacts: Some areas show burn damage and dry vegetation depending on recent conditions.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

People’s Park has a long history as an unofficial clothing-optional spot, particularly along certain river sections away from the main paths. While it is not officially designated as a nude area, some visitors still treat it as such, especially during warm weather. Nudity tends to be sporadic rather than constant, so you may encounter anything from fully clothed groups to nude sunbathers depending on the day and location.

Because of the mixed-use nature of the park, expectations can vary. Some people come specifically for the free-spirited atmosphere, while others are simply there for swimming or relaxation. The People's Park is a well known but unofficial naturist location in Washington State that deserves a visit.

Insider Tip

Visit earlier in the day or on weekdays for the calmest atmosphere and easier parking. Water levels are safest later in summer after spring runoff decreases.

Who's Here
