The Good
- Hidden gem: Tucked between cliffs not too far from More Mesa nude beach this small cove feels secluded despite being close to the highway. The short downhill trail makes it feel like a secret spot you earn by walking there.
- Beautiful views: Once you reach the sand, you’re greeted by panoramic ocean views framed by rugged coastal rock formations. The scenery from both the beach and the parking area above is breathtaking, especially at sunset.
- Relaxed atmosphere: It is quiet and laid-back during off-hours. The waves are gentle, and it’s easy to spend the afternoon just watching hermit crabs, sea snails, or the occasional whale in the distance.
- Accessible hike: The trail from Cave Landing Road is short and easy to follow. It’s steep in parts but manageable with good shoes, offering great photo spots along the way.
The Bad
- No facilities: There are no restrooms, showers, or food services on the beach or in the parking area. The nearest amenities are about a mile away in Avila Beach.
- Crowd mix: While the entire beach is clothing optional, expect a mix of clothed and nude visitors. The north end can be more social, especially with Cal Poly students, while the south end stays quieter and more naturist.
- Graffiti and litter: Some visitors have left graffiti around the cave and trail. Litter can occasionally be found near the rocks despite available trash bins at the parking area.
- Party noise: On weekends or sunny afternoons, the north side can turn into a small party scene with loud music and drinks. Earlier in the day or during the off-season is usually calmer.
The Naked Truth
Pirates Cove Beach combines natural beauty with a long-standing local reputation as a clothing-optional hideaway. Over time, it’s become a mix of casual beachgoers, curious hikers, and seasoned naturists. Despite more visitors discovering it, the sense of freedom and relaxation remains strong, the kind you can only find in a small cove surrounded by cliffs and sea breeze.
Graffiti aside, the area’s raw coastal scenery still shines through. The trail walk, the smell of the ocean, and the echo inside the cave make it feel like a place frozen in time. It’s not a luxury destination, but rather a reflection of California’s wild, free-spirited beach culture. There aren't that many nude beaches in California, but this is great choice.
Insider Tip
Wear hiking shoes with good grip - the path can be slippery, especially after fog or light rain. Bring plenty of water and snacks, and plan your visit in the afternoon when the fog clears.
