Nudity Policy
REQUIREDNudity is required during summer season
The Good
- Secure and fully managed naturist beach: Access is restricted and carefully monitored, ensuring a peaceful, safe environment. Visitors can leave belongings unattended without concern.
- On-site amenities: Includes restaurant (Chez Basile), toilets, showers, boules court, and shaded seating areas. Rare level of comfort for a naturist location in France.
- Calm, friendly atmosphere: Described as extremely quiet, welcoming, and suitable for relaxation. Family-friendly (with caution regarding rocky terrain).
- Clean, warm water & peaceful swimming: Rocky access to the water, but once in, the sea is clear and calm. Shoes are required to enter the water safely.
- Free parking available close to the beach: Convenient for visitors arriving by car, though access is seasonal (membership required in peak summer).
- Ideal spot for naturist leisure: Offers fishing, snorkeling, diving, underwater hunting, pétanque, and sunbathing. Long-time visitors describe it as a personal retreat spanning decades.
The Bad
- Industrial surroundings: Visible proximity to a power plant, container ships, and industrial chimneys can detract from the natural scenery. Some found the view unpleasant.
- Rocky terrain requiring footwear: Very rocky beach area; walking barefoot is not possible. Beach shoes are mandatory both on the beach and in the water.
- Restricted entry in high season: From early June to late September, a membership card and two existing members as sponsors are required to enter. Single men are not allowed unless sponsored.
- Limited space: Small cove; becomes overcrowded during peak times. Promiscuity is noted despite being a naturist location.
- Noise and wind exposure: Often windy and lacking shade. Prominent industrial presence affects ambiance.
- Occasional pollution: Some reports mention oil residue from passing ships and plastic debris. Requires constant maintenance.
The Naked Truth
The Plage Naturiste de Bonnieu is controlled naturism, not wild freedom. Once you’re inside, it’s one of the safest, calmest naturist beaches you’ll find: access is monitored, the crowd is known and respectful, and amenities like Chez Basile, showers, and shaded seating make it unusually comfortable for a nude setting. Many regulars treat it as a private refuge where nudity is unquestioned and personal space is respected.
But the trade-offs are real. The setting is industrial; chimneys, ships, and wind can break the illusion of “nature”; and the beach itself is harshly rocky, demanding water shoes at all times. In peak summer, the membership-and-sponsorship rules are strict, which keeps the atmosphere calm but also exclusionary (especially for solo visitors). Space is limited, and on busy days it can feel tight. Bonnieu is ideal if you value security, rules, and comfort over scenery. If you’re looking for sand, open horizons, or a spontaneous drop-in naturist vibe, this place will feel restrictive.
Insider Tip
Bring sturdy water shoes, parasol, and avoid peak heat hours due to arid conditions and limited natural shade.
Who's Here
Naturist couples, families, long-time regulars, and older locals. Non-naturists are not permitted during restricted access.
Beach Surface
Rocky, arid terrain with sharp stones. Clear, warm sea once entered. Limited sandy patches. Some visitors enjoy watching flower-covered ground nearby in October. Sun exposure is high; no natural shade.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: Rocky descent requires beach shoes. Easy for most adults, but not suitable for disabled visitors or toddlers.

Getting There
Located on the Blue Coast near Ponteau, Martigues.
By Car: Drive toward Ponteau / Plage de Bonnieu via coastal road D5 from Martigues. Follow signs for Ponteau and Plage Naturiste de Bonnieu. Park in the designated free parking area near the entrance (parking itself remains accessible year-round, but beach entry is regulated in high summer).
By Public Transport: Take a regional TER train on the Marseille–Miramas coastal line and get off at La Couronne–Carro or Martigues station. From there, use a local bus or taxi toward Ponteau / Plage de Bonnieu (bus services are limited and seasonal). Expect a final walk from the drop-off point along the coastal road and down to the entrance. Because connections are infrequent and the last stretch is on foot, car or taxi is strongly recommended if you’re carrying beach gear.
