The Good

  • Wild naturist stretch: A long, open section of sand with dunes and sea on one side and lagoons on the other, so it still feels properly “natural” even though you’re close to Montpellier.
  • Big, spacious beach: Once you’ve made the walk in, there’s loads of room to spread out and you’re not crammed towel-to-towel with strangers.
  • Calm, relaxed vibe: The naturist area has a low-key, mostly local crowd, so it feels normal and non-judgy rather than like a “spectacle.”
  • Great for long walks: The shoreline seems to go on forever, making it ideal for naked beach walks, swimming, and just zoning out by the water.

The Bad

  • Bit of a mission to reach: You’ll either walk or take the little train from the parking area, so it’s not ideal if you’re carrying heaps of stuff or have small kids.
  • Paid parking only: You have to pay to leave the car (6 euros per day), and in high season the car park can get busy and feel a bit chaotic.
  • Limited facilities: Once you’re on the naturist stretch there’s not much in the way of shade, shops, or bars, so you need to bring water, snacks, and sun protection with you.
  • Wind and weather exposed: Because it’s so open, wind, waves, and sand can be intense on some days, which might put off more casual beachgoers.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Plage naturelle de Maguelone feels like the kind of place you go when you actually want a day at the beach, not just a quick dip. It’s a bit of a mission to get to, but once you’ve done the walk (or little train), you’re rewarded with a long, wild stretch of sand where you can actually breathe. The naturist area feels relaxed and normal - mostly couples and locals, nobody making a big deal out of nudity. It’s one of those naturist beaches in France where you can wander for ages without feeling crowded or stared at.

There are trade-offs though: no real shade, no handy beach bar behind you, and that walk back to the car feels longer at the end of the day. If you need loungers, cold drinks, and zero effort, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you like your nude beach days simple then Maguelone delivers. Just come prepared with water, snacks, and sunscreen, and you’ll be happy you made the effort.

Insider Tip

Come here for the full day. Otherwise it is too much of a mission and too costly.

Getting There

Plage naturelle de Maguelone isn’t a “pull up and flop down” kind of beach – getting there is part of the experience. You’ll leave the car behind, cross over the lagoons, and walk (or take the little summer train) out towards the sand. It’s all well signposted from Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, but you do need to be ready for a 15–25 minute walk with your gear.

By Car:
From Montpellier, drive towards Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone and follow signs for Plage du Pilou / Maguelone. In high season you’ll use the Pilou beach car park or the Maguelone Cathedral car park – both paid in summer. From there, you either walk along the path over the lagoons or hop on the petit train (usually running from roughly mid-May to mid-September) which drops you near the main beach access. Once you reach the sand, keep walking along the shoreline until you reach the naturist section.

By Public Transport:
From Montpellier, take tram line 4 towards the southwest and get off at the Garcia Lorca / Tram 4 Pilou connection for bus 32. Ride the bus to the Pilou stop, then follow the marked path across the footbridge and along the track towards the beach (around 30 minutes on foot). In summer, you may be able to connect with the petit train part of the way, but outside peak season you should plan to walk the whole distance to reach the naturist area.
