Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity is optional (there is a naturist area)
The Good
- Beautiful sheltered cove: A small golden-sand beach backed by rocky cliffs and greenery, creating a peaceful, intimate setting protected from wind on many days. It's truly one of the best wild naturist spots in France.
- Atmospheric access & views: The descent via steps reveals a dramatic coastal panorama; once on the sand the environment feels tucked away and scenic.
- Friendly naturist tradition: Well-known as a naturist spot with generally relaxed coexistence and a calm vibe, especially during quieter hours or outside peak season.
- Warm water & easy wading at high tide: On calm days, warm shallow pockets and gentle water can make for pleasant dips (with care around rocks).
The Bad
- Very male-heavy crowd: Numerous reports of mostly single men, often significantly outnumbering women and couples. Some visitors feel observed or uncomfortable depending on where they sit.
- Voyeur presence & behavior: Occasional men lingering to watch, and a few reports of inappropriate conduct. Awareness recommended, especially for solo women or first-timers.
- Limited space at high tide: The beach is small; rising tide pushes everyone close to the rocks, reducing comfort and privacy. Can feel crowded in peak midday hours.
- Rocky water & steep access: 101 steps down; steep and not ideal for those with mobility issues. Rocky seabed makes swimming tricky, water shoes recommended. Peeble/rock pockets at lower tide.
- Jellyfish sightings: Moon jellyfish commonly present; can limit swimming comfort on some days.
The Naked Truth
Plage des Jaunais is a charming naturist cove tucked below Saint-Marc, offering a golden pocket of sand, wind shelter, and a relaxed, scenic place to sunbathe. Its small size and cliff-enclosed shape create a cozy atmosphere, and regular naturists enjoy its calm, friendly rhythm, particularly in the shoulder seasons or evenings when the light softens and crowds thin.
But this is not a wide, expansive beach, nor a balanced naturist crowd every day. The demographic here frequently skews heavily male, and some visitors report voyeuristic behavior or men lingering in observation rather than relaxation. Swimming requires care due to rocks, and space disappears quickly at high tide. For those who choose their spot wisely and time their visit, though, Jaunais can feel like a peaceful hidden corner with a loyal naturist community.
Insider Tip
Settle further from stairs for comfort. Shoes recommended for rocky seabed. Evening and off-season visits are often quieter and more relaxed.
Who's Here
Mostly solo men and some couples; occasional families or younger visitors. Can feel friendly or awkward depending on timing and crowd mix. Evening sun-seekers and loyal regulars frequent the cove.
Beach Surface
Fine sand with rocky edges underwater. Narrow strip that shrinks at high tide. Moon jellyfish possible. Mostly sheltered from wind but can be cold and rough in stormy weather.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: steep staircase (~101 steps). Not ideal for small children or anyone with mobility limitations. Free parking across from access; public toilets nearby.

Getting There
Located near Saint-Marc-sur-Mer on the Loire-Atlantique coast.
By Car: Navigate to Saint-Marc-sur-Mer, west of Saint-Nazaire, and park at the free Aire parking opposite the coastal path. Cross toward the seaside and follow the footpath to the stairs down into the cove (around 101 steps). The naturist area is generally to the right once you reach the sand. Parking fills quickly in summer, so arriving earlier in the day is helpful.
By Public Transport: Take a bus from Saint-Nazaire to Saint-Marc-sur-Mer (lines to "Saint-Marc" or "Place du Marché" area). From the bus stop, walk toward the coast and join the coastal path leading to the staircase down to the beach. The descent is steep, so allow time and wear good footwear.
