Nudity Policy
OPTIONALNudity is expected but optional (designated naturist areas on both ends)
The Good
- Huge, breathtaking coastline: A long ribbon of fine, pale sand backed by pine forest and dunes. Calm sea, expansive horizon, and an unspoiled atmosphere - often called the most beautiful beach on Île d’Oléron.
- True naturist welcome: Clearly established naturist zones on both sides of the main beach area. Respectful crowd, relaxed atmosphere, and a genuine local naturist culture.
- Magnificent setting & views: Stunning view toward Fort Boyard, Île d’Aix, and even naturist beaches near La Rochelle and Île de Ré in clear weather. The sunset light here is exceptional.
- Calm water & soft entry: Gentle slope into the sea, making wading and paddling pleasant. Great for long barefoot walks, family-friendly vibe, and spacious freedom.
The Bad
- Tiny parking area: Small free lots fill quickly, especially summer mornings; arriving around 9–10am is often essential. Many resort to walking or cycling in.
- No services on the beach: No food, rentals, or shade. Bring water, snacks, and sun protection. Respect protected dunes and marked paths.
- Mixed presence: Mostly respectful naturists and families, but occasional reports of exhibitionist behavior or wandering lone men in rare moments - monitor where you settle.
- Natural “surprises”: Seaweed in the water and drifting strands brushing swimmers; can unsettle sensitive bathers. Sand fleas at dusk along the tide line.
- Access walk through forest: Beautiful but sandy trails; not accessible for all. Bicycles are common due to limited car parking.
The Naked Truth
Saumonards is one of France’s most beloved naturist beaches; vast, natural, pine-scented, and wonderfully free. Families, couples, and seasoned naturists praise its space, calm water, gentle waves, and the rare feeling of an untouched Atlantic landscape. The mixture of forest, dunes, fine sand, and the cinematic view of Fort Boyard gives it a magical island character that feels far from busy resort beaches.
This is not a commercial naturist zone; there are no bars, no lifeguards, and no structure. It is quiet, pure nature, and best enjoyed by those who value space over convenience. Arriving early, walking through the pines, spreading a towel anywhere along miles of sand - it feels like true naturist freedom. On rare occasions, unwelcome behavior has been reported, but most days are peaceful, respectful, and serene.
Insider Tip
Naturist zones are located on both sides of the main beach. Follow boardwalks and marked dune paths. Very limited shade - hats and sunscreen essential. Water is calm but checks tide; occasional rolling shore breaks.
Who's Here
Naturist couples, families, respectful locals, and cyclists; some textile walkers where zones overlap. Summer sees a mix, shoulder seasons more purely naturist. Mostly friendly, chilled, and respectful crowd.
Beach Surface
Fine golden sand, dune backdrop, clear calm water, gentle slope. Seaweed patches, occasional sand fleas at dusk, posts visible at low tide. Clean and well cared-for.
Access Difficulty
Easy to moderate: short walk through pine forest and dunes from parking, boardwalks in season. Not ideal for those with mobility issues. Bikes are very common.

Getting There
Located near Boyardville on Île d’Oléron, facing Fort Boyard.
By Car: Drive toward Boyardville, then follow signs for Plage des Saumonards. Free parking at the forest edge, but space is very limited - arrive early in summer. From the lot, follow boardwalks or sandy forest paths to the naturist sections at either end of the beach. Respect dune fencing and stay on marked trails.
By Public Transport: Take a bus to Boyardville (seasonal island routes from Saint-Denis-d’Oléron and Saint-Pierre). Walk or cycle through the Saumonards forest toward the beach access; follow boardwalks to naturist areas. The walk is pleasant but sandy - allows time and bring supplies.
