The Good
- Spacious and scenic: Plakias Beach stretches for over a kilometer along Crete’s southern coast, framed by rugged mountains and turquoise water. The contrast of cliffs, greenery, and blue sea gives it a wild Mediterranean beauty that feels both open and dramatic.
- Well-equipped: Visitors will find changing cabins, showers, toilets, lifeguards, and plenty of sun loungers. Prices for umbrellas and chairs hover around €10 per set. Numerous beach bars and seaside taverns serve snacks, gyros, and cold drinks, all within a short walk.
- Naturist-friendly: The far southwestern end of the beach is unofficially clothing optional, a long-time favorite among naturists who prefer a quieter corner away from the main family section. It’s discreet and widely accepted by locals and visitors alike.
- Easy access: The beach sits right next to the village of Plakias, with parking available just steps away. It’s also surrounded by small hotels and guesthouses, many just a minute from the water.
- Good for activities: When the wind is calmer, you can rent kayaks, SUP boards, or try windsurfing. The clear water makes for pleasant swimming and snorkeling.
The Bad
- Constant wind: The biggest drawback is the strong, persistent wind — sometimes blowing day and night. Sand can sting when gusts pick up, and swimming may be rough for small children.
- Cold water: Because of a freshwater stream entering the bay, the water near the shore can feel surprisingly cold, even in summer.
- Crowded in season: In August, the main stretch fills quickly, though the nudist section stays more peaceful.
- Mixed pricing: Some beach bars charge tourist-level prices for simple meals, while others are very affordable. It’s worth comparing before sitting down.
The Naked Truth
Plakias Beach is one of the most accessible and well-known naturist-friendly beaches in Crete - large, comfortable, and inclusive. The nude area at the far western end is long-established and quietly respected, with a relaxed and open atmosphere. Facilities are good, access is easy, and the scenery is unforgettable.
However, the strong winds are part of its identity; locals joke that the breeze never takes a day off. If you come prepared with a windbreaker and realistic expectations, Plakias delivers a perfect mix of natural beauty, comfort, and freedom.
Insider Tip
Head west past the rocky outcrop to find the naturist area; it’s quieter and more sheltered from families and crowds. Bring aqua shoes for the pebbly entry and a light jacket if you’re staying through the evening.
Who's Here
A mix of couples, naturists, backpackers, and families; locals and Europeans alike.
Beach Surface
Fine gravel turning to soft sand; shallow entry but can deepen quickly.
Access Difficulty
Easy - parking, hotels, and taverns are steps from the beach.
