The Good

  • The water: Like most Costa Tropical beaches, expect crystal-clear Mediterranean waters - calm and inviting for a dip.
  • Spacious: Even on a busy day, this beach offers plenty of room to spread out and feel relaxed.
  • Shade options: Rare for Spain, you can choose between sandy spots near the water or shaded grassy areas under the trees - perfect for escaping the midday sun.

The Bad

  • Wildlife encounters: Wild pigs roam the area and will sniff out food in your bags if you’re not careful.
  • Lengthy walk: The uphill trek back to the car park is no joke - especially under the Spanish sun after a long beach day.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Playa de las Alberquillas is one of the more unique beaches on the Costa Tropical. With its rugged natural beauty, calm blue water, and shady grassy areas, it stands out from the typical Spanish beach. The wild pigs add an element of surprise. Fun for some, stressful for others but either way guard your picnic! If you’re up for the hike in and out, this is an experience you’ll never forget.

Insider Tip

Pack light! Between the steep hike and wild pigs, you’ll thank yourself for leaving unnecessary stuff behind.

A mix of locals and tourists, mostly couples and small groups.

Beach Surface

Pebbles and rocks

Access Difficulty

We won’t forget Playa de las Alberquillas anytime soon and not just because of the views. Getting there was an adventure in itself. After parking at the lot on the side of the highway, it’s a steady downhill walk to the beach. It feels easy on the way in, but trust us, that hike back in the heat is a workout. At leasst the trail is easy to find and well warn.

The beach itself is gorgeous - wide, open, and framed by cliffs. The Mediterranean water here is classic Costa Tropical: calm, clear, and a shade of blue that looks like a postcard. We cooled off with a swim almost immediately after arriving, and honestly, that first plunge made the trek worth it.

What we didn’t expect? Wild pigs. At first, it was kind of cool, like how often do you share a beach with wildlife? But as soon as they realized we had food, it turned into a little standoff. Pro tip: keep your snacks sealed and close to you. They weren’t aggressive, just determined, and eventually wandered off when they figured we weren’t sharing. But other people on the beach were not so lucky when they discovered the pigs have eaten their food and spread their belongings across the beach.

One thing we loved was the choice of sitting spots - you can set up on the sand near the water or head a little farther back to the grassy area under trees for shade. We ended up moving back later in the day to escape the direct sun.

Overall, we really enjoyed the experience, but we’d only recommend this beach if you’re okay with the hike and being a little extra cautious with your lunch. If that sounds like a lot, there are easier-access beaches nearby like Playa de Cantarriján. But if you’re looking for something a little wild and different, Alberquillas delivers.

Getting There

Playa de las Alberquillas is located within the protected natural area of the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs, about a 15-minute drive from Nerja and roughly 35 minutes from La Herradura. This isn’t a beach you just stumble across—it feels remote and untouched, which adds to its charm.

By Car:
Driving is the easiest and most practical option. From the N-340 coastal road, follow signs toward Maro/Cerro Gordo. There’s a small parking lot near the trailhead, but spaces fill quickly in peak season. After parking, expect a 10–15-minute downhill walk on a dirt path. It’s easy enough going down but steep and tiring on the way back, so bring water and good footwear.

By Public Transport:
There’s no direct public transport to Playa de las Alberquillas. Your best bet without a car is to take a bus or taxi to Maro or La Herradura, then use a rideshare or local taxi to reach the trailhead.

Recommended Accommodation

Nearby La Herradura is your best option if you want to stay close to the beach. The small town has everything you could need but is very laidback and lacks a huge amount of nightlife. There are no clothing optional accommodation options nearby.

Recommended Non-Nude:

Hotel Pena Parda-⭐⭐⭐⭐
This place has all the facilities you need and laidback vibe, it is also right on the beach (not the nude beach.. but you won't find any hotels there). Lots of parking, beach views and clean spacious rooms. Walkable to many restaurants and bars in La Herradura. Highly recommended.
