The Good
- Calm, clear water: The water here is stunning - blue, calm, and refreshing. It even feels warmer than other Costa Tropical beaches (or maybe we’re just acclimatizing!).
- Peaceful vibe: Playa la Joya lives up to its name- “The Jewel.” It’s quiet and serene, with visitors keeping to themselves, making it perfect for a chill day.
- Scenic setting: Rugged cliffs, natural rock formations, and beautiful sea views make this one of the most picturesque beaches on the coast.
The Bad
- The journey: The descent is easy enough, but the climb back up - about 200 steps will test your legs. Pack light!
- Exposed elements: Shade is limited, and the sea breeze can feel intense. While some love the cool relief, on a windy day it might cut your beach time short.
The Naked Truth
Playa la Joya is a true Costa Tropical gem. Yes, it takes some effort to reach, both by car and on foot - but once you step onto this quiet, rocky cove, you’ll understand why it’s worth it. The turquoise water is calm and clear, the surrounhttps://nudebeachmap.com/places/tags/costa-tropical/ding cliffs create a wild and secluded atmosphere, and the vibe is relaxed and respectful. Come prepared: bring an umbrella, water, and snacks because there are no services on the beach. If you’re up for the stairs, this beach rewards you with natural beauty and a sense of escape from the busier spots nearby.
Insider Tip
Those who go nude tend to gravitate toward the rocky cove on the right side after you descend the stairs - more privacy and shelter from the wind.
Who's Here
Locals and tourists. Mostly couples (dressed ad undressed)
Beach Surface
Pebbles and rocks
Access Difficulty
Moderate: about 200 well-built steps down (and back up). The path is safe but steep, so plan for a workout on the return.

Our Visit
Matt & Megan
Nude Beach Map. Visited 2025
Playa la Joya reminded us of some of our favorite hidden beaches back home (Wreck Beach in Vancouver especially) but just minus the crowds. After driving about 35 minutes from La Herradura, we parked easily near the trailhead and started the descent. The stairs themselves aren’t bad, but they definitely stick in your mind because you know what’s coming later!

Once we hit the beach, the first thing we noticed was how peaceful it was. Just a few groups scattered along the shore, some clothed, others nude. The water was calm and a gorgeous blue-green - perfect for cooling off after that hike down. There’s no natural shade except for a few spots tucked against the rocks, so if you can, bring an umbrella. We didn’t see any facilities, so snacks and drinks are a must.
The vibe here is super relaxed and everyone minded their own business, we felt comfortable going nude right away. We stayed for a few hours, just soaking in the views, before bracing ourselves for the climb back up. It’s a challenge, but honestly, it makes the beach feel like a reward you’ve earned.
If you’re in the Costa Tropical region and want a quiet, scenic nude-friendly beach, Playa la Joya should be on your list. It’s less busy than the famous Cantarriján and feels more rugged and authentic. Just be ready for those stairs!

Getting There
By Car: Playa la Joya is located near Torrenueva Costa, about 35 minutes east of La Herradura or 15 minutes from Motril. From the N-340, follow signs toward “Playa la Joya” and look for the small parking area near the trailhead. Parking is free but limited, so arrive early in peak season.
By Public Transport: There’s no direct public transportation to the beach. Your best bet is to take a bus to Torrenueva and then a taxi to the trailhead.
