The Good

  • One of the most rewarding beaches on the Pacific coast: After a week of beach-hopping, many travelers still say this was the best one. The effort it takes to reach Playa La Macha makes the arrival feel like a real victory.
  • Truly secluded and peaceful: No vendors, no music, no crowds. Most groups stay to themselves, and at times there are only 5 to 8 people on the entire beach.
  • Stunning natural setting: Lush rainforest surrounds the trail, and once you reach the sand you’ll find rugged volcanic rocks, warm water, wildlife everywhere, and dramatic ocean views.
  • Great for low-key swimming and relaxing: On calm days, the water is perfect for floating and cooling off. The waves are stronger than some nearby beaches but still enjoyable.
  • Naturist-friendly vibe: Many visitors treat this as a clothing-optional beach in Costa Rica, especially in the more secluded left and right sections away from the main entry point.
  • Wildlife encounters on the way: People regularly see monkeys, birds, crabs, and even rare sightings like a three-toed sloth along the hike.

The Bad

  • The final descent is no joke: The last 50–100 feet down to the beach is extremely steep, with loose dirt and ropes for support. A slip here could mean serious injury.
  • Not suitable for young kids or mobility issues: Families with children under 10, anyone with knee problems, balance issues, or fear of heights should avoid this beach entirely.
  • The climb back up is exhausting: The return hike is entirely uphill, hot, and demanding. Several visitors nearly passed out after long stays at the beach without enough water.
  • High tide can ruin the visit: At high tide, the beach can shrink down to just a few feet of rocks. Some people arrived and immediately had to leave because there was no usable sand left.
  • Trail conditions change constantly: Mudslides, washed-out paths, loose rocks, and slippery sections are common. What feels manageable one month may be sketchy the next.
  • Theft has occurred: At least one visitor reported a stolen phone. Because the beach is isolated, always keep valuables close.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Playa La Macha is earned, not given. This is one of those beaches that feels incredible because it’s hard to reach. The hike filters out almost everyone who isn’t serious, and what’s left is quiet, space, and a raw Pacific setting that feels untouched. Nudity here isn’t official, but it’s commonly practiced, especially away from the main entry; and generally respected because everyone who makes it down understands the unspoken rules.

That said, this beach has zero forgiveness. The final descent is genuinely dangerous if you’re tired, careless, or overconfident, and the climb back up in heat can wipe you out if you didn’t bring enough water. High tide can erase the beach completely, and trail conditions change without warning. La Macha rewards fit, prepared, cautious visitors with one of the most memorable beaches in Costa Rica; but if you underestimate it, it can turn on you fast.

Insider Tip

Go early in the morning at low tide for the best experience and the most beach space. If the last rope section feels beyond your comfort zone, turn back; this beach is not worth risking injury.

Who's Here

Adventurous couples, solo travelers, hikers, quiet naturists, and exploration-loving beach seekers. Not a party crowd. Not a family beach. Everyone tends to respect personal space.

Beach Surface

Soft, silky sand with scattered rocks near the edges. The seabed has some rocky patches and waves can be strong at times. The shoreline changes dramatically with the tide.

Access Difficulty

High: The trail is long, steep, and physically demanding. The last descent to the beach is the most dangerous section and requires careful movement.

Getting There

Playa La Macha is located near Manuel Antonio / Quepos, Costa Rica, hidden beyond residential roads and forested hills.

By Car: Drive toward the area around Hotel Bongo in Quepos. Near the end of the road, you’ll find small informal parking at the trailhead. Vehicles cannot reach the beach. A 4×4 can sometimes go slightly farther, but most people park early and continue on foot.

From the parking area, follow a wide gravel trail through forest and steep hills. The path eventually narrows into a muddy, slippery descent with ropes. The final 50-100 feet down to the sand is very steep and requires slow, careful movement.
