The Good
- Easy access Located just off Route 10 (km 115.5), close to Punta del Este, Piriápolis, and Maldonado, you can reach it easily by car or Uber. It’s also conveniently close to Punta del Este International Airport, making it one of the most accessible naturist beaches in Uruguay.
- Hotels nearby There is a nearby clothing optional hotel called Hotel El Refugio Nudista Naturista - which is perfect if you’re planning to stay near the beach
- Spacious sandy beach Soft golden sand, refreshing water, and plenty of room to spread out.
- Respectful crowd Visitors describe it as calm, friendly, and chill, most come for genuine naturist relaxation.
- Great weather Sunny and warm most of the time, with little wind, perfect for spending the day.
- Naturist tradition One of Uruguay’s few recognized nude beaches; nudity is normalized and welcomed.
The Bad
- No facilities No restrooms, limited food kiosks, no rental chairs - so you need to bring your own umbrella, water, and supplies.
- Mixed crowd Some people stay dressed and may stare, which regulars find disrespectful. True naturists expect consistency.
- Losing its wild charm There are some mentions of increasing noise, kiosks, and banners that detract from the peaceful atmosphere.
- Distance It’s not recommended to walk if you’re coming from Punta del Este, especially if you’re staying there (which is mostly the case for visitors), but still doable for a day trip.
The Naked Truth
Playa Naturista Chihuahua has a long history in Uruguay’s naturist scene and remains one of the few places where nudity feels completely natural. It’s not a luxury destination since it’s simple, quiet, and focused on the experience of being outdoors without judgment.
Over the years, the area has changed a bit. There are now more signs than before, which makes it feel slightly more developed, but the spirit of the place is still the same. The sand is soft, the water is calm, and most visitors understand the culture of naturism like being comfortable, kind, and mindful of others. As long as you bring what you need for the day, it’s a peaceful spot to slow down and reconnect with nature.

Pack essentials like water, snacks, and shade. Facilities are minimal, and there are limited (or sometimes zero) food options on the beach.

Getting There
Playa Chihuahua is located along Route 10 at kilometer 115.5, about 2 kilometers east of the El Potrero stream, facing the Río de la Plata.
By Car or Uber:
Around 20-30 minutes from Punta del Este and less than 30 minutes from Maldonado. It’s also only a few minutes from Punta del Este International Airport. Parking is available near the entrance.
By Public Transport:
No direct buses. Taxis or ride-hailing apps are the most practical way to reach the beach.
