The Good
- The adventure just to get here is half the magic: You don’t simply “arrive” at Playa Miami, you cross a lagoon. Some people do it by kayak with guides, others by small boat, and in the old days, locals even loaded cars onto rafts. Even before touching the sand, it already feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience for this naturist beach in South America.
- Huge, wild, movie-scene type of beach: Once you arrive, you’re greeted by a wide open stretch of sand, rolling Atlantic waves, and almost no one around. It feels untouched, raw, and completely off the grid.
- Perfect “survivor-style” vibes: This is the kind of place where people camp, build simple kitchens, hang hammocks, and live with the rhythm of nature. If you love the idea of being disconnected and self-sufficient, this beach hits differently.
- Great for kayaking lovers: Paddling through the Tacarigua Lagoon, surrounded by mangroves and birds, then emerging into the open ocean is something people never forget. It’s peaceful, scenic, and surreal.
- Fresh fish, simple island food: At the Tortuga Lodge / Travelodge area, there’s a small restaurant where the fish is as fresh as it gets. Don’t expect fancy dishes, but the flavors are honest, simple, and satisfying.
- That unforgettable sunrise and sunset energy: Many people talk about sunrise here like it permanently stamped itself into their memory, quiet sky, soft light, only the sea making noise. It’s one of those beaches that sticks with you emotionally.
The Bad
- You cannot drive here: Playa Miami is only reachable by kayak or boat. No bridge. No road. No shortcuts. If something goes wrong late in the day, you are fully depending on your ride back.
- Water can be murky near shore: Because this sits just beyond the lagoon mouth, the water is often cloudy brown-green, not the clear turquoise people usually expect. It’s still warm and swimmable, just not postcard-clear.
- Very limited services: Outside the Tortuga Lodge zone, there’s nothing; no shops, no lifeguards, no bathrooms, no vendors. If you didn’t bring it with you, you won’t have it.
- Some areas feel abandoned: Parts of the old tourism complex and dock are in poor condition. Some visitors love the “ruins in nature” look, while others find it sad and neglected.
- Garbage in certain stretches: Sadly, not all sections are clean. Some areas suffer from trash washed in or left behind, which breaks the illusion a bit.
- Electricity and comforts are limited if you stay overnight: At Tortuga Lodge, electricity only runs in the evening and early morning. No constant power, no luxury, what you get is quiet, darkness, and stars.
The Naked Truth
Playa Miami is about adventure, not comfort. The lagoon crossing filters out casual visitors, leaving a wild, quiet beach that feels cut off from the world. It’s powerful, raw, and emotionally memorable; especially at sunrise and sunset.
This is not a common naturist beach. However occasionally people strip off. You come here clothed, self-sufficient, and ready to disconnect. If you want ease or clear water, look elsewhere or far end of the beach. If you want solitude, silence, and a real sense of escape, Playa Miami delivers.
Insider Tip
If you want the full Playa Miami experience, go by kayak with a local guide through Tacarigua Lagoon, it’s calmer, more scenic, and much more memorable than a quick boat ride.
Who's Here
Adventurous travelers, kayakers, couples looking to unplug, small camping groups, and people chasing nostalgia for “old Venezuela.” Very few casual tourists.
Beach Surface
Wide sandy shore with rolling Atlantic waves. The seabed near the lagoon outlet is darker and murkier, while sections closer to the lodge are calmer and more inviting.
Access Difficulty
Challenging by design: You must cross Tacarigua Lagoon by: Kayak with guides or a small motor boat. No walking access and no vehicle access.

Getting There
Playa Miami is located beyond the Tacarigua Lagoon, near Río Chico, on Venezuela’s central Caribbean coast.
By Boat or Kayak (most common): From Río Chico or Belén, go to the lagoon mouth near the park ranger post. From there, you take a:
- Penero (small boat)
- Or a guided kayak tour
The crossing takes around 15–20 minutes through mangroves before reaching the open beach.
Via Tortuga Lodge / Travelodge: From Río Chico, follow the road toward the lagoon area. Near the gas station (bomba), turn right as locals describe. From there, boats take you directly across the lagoon to the lodge’s dock.
From Caracas: Drive about 2 to 2.5 hours to Río Chico, then continue by boat or kayak.
