The Good
- Secluded and peaceful: Tucked within native bush and steep coastal cliffs, Pohutukawa Bay feels like a hidden retreat far from the bustle of Auckland. The isolation gives it a rare sense of calm and privacy.
- Long-standing naturist tradition: For over 60 years locals have used this bay for clothing-optional swimming and sunbathing. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with a strong sense of respect among visitors.
- Scenic walk to reach it: The journey itself is part of the charm. You can reach the bay via the coastal track from Long Bay Regional Park or by walking around the rocks at low tide. Both routes offer lush forest, fern-lined paths, and panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf.
- Natural beauty: Golden sand, clear turquoise water, and dramatic cliffs frame the beach. At sunrise or sunset, the colours are breathtaking.
- Tranquil experience: Even on sunny weekends, it rarely feels crowded. Perfect for quiet reflection, photography, or simply listening to the surf in solitude.
The Bad
- No facilities or signage: No toilets, bins, or clear markings. Bring everything you need and pack it out again.
- Tricky access: The descent to the beach is steep and uneven in places. Wear sturdy shoes, especially if coming via the track from Long Bay.
- Sudden drop-off in the water: The seabed deepens quickly near shore, so swimming should be done with care.
- Tide-dependent access: The coastal route is only passable at low tide; otherwise, use the longer bush track.
- Not ideal for families: Due to the terrain, it’s better suited for adults seeking solitude than for children.
The Naked Truth
Pohutukawa Bay is one of Auckland’s most serene and storied naturist beaches - wild, green, and quietly beautiful. Hidden between headlands, it invites visitors to slow down and disconnect. The lack of facilities and signage keeps it unspoiled, and the small community of regulars maintains a welcoming, respectful culture. Whether clothed or not, visitors come for the same reason: to enjoy the coast as nature intended - peaceful, raw, and untouched.
Insider Tip
No official signage exists, but local rangers and police are generally tolerant so long as behaviour remains respectful.
