The Good
- Picturesque and naturally beautiful: Anse Tarare is a small, secluded cove with white sand, turquoise water, and scenic vegetation. Some visitors describe it as “a little paradise,” especially when arriving early in the morning.
- Only official naturist beach in Guadeloupe: Visitors come specifically for the freedom of full-body tanning and nude swimming. The atmosphere can be pleasant and liberating for naturists seeking a legal spot to enjoy Caribbean sun without clothing.
- Easy to reach once parked: Access is via a short walking path from the parking area beside the Chez Man Michel restaurant. Multiple reviews confirm it’s just a few minutes down a slightly uneven but straightforward trail. Some shaded spots available on the sand.
- Great water clarity and snorkeling: Water temperature around 27°C. Clear areas allow viewing of tropical fish. Calm sea when conditions are good, though currents can occasionally pull outward.
- Optional hiking views nearby: The viewpoint above the beach offers stunning panoramas of Pointe des Châteaux and La Désirade. Best experienced early morning.
The Bad
- Widely reported inappropriate behavior: Numerous visitors strongly warn of bad behavior from local men who linger, stare, follow, and attempt to solicit interaction, often targeting single women or couples. Many describe feeling uncomfortable, unsafe, or immediately leaving.
- Very small and crowded during peak times: Beach is roughly 200 meters long, meaning limited personal space. Several people mentioned constant walking “parades,” mostly by men observing others.
- Dirty surroundings at times: Despite its beauty, litter is reported; plastic and glass containers, discarded waste, and lack of cleanliness from some visitors. Frequent complaints about trash despite posted reminders.
- Potential for strong surf or currents: Some days, waves are strong and entry more difficult. Lagoon shape helps reduce swell, but caution is necessary.
The Naked Truth
Anse Tarare is legally naturist; and that’s both its biggest draw and its biggest problem. On paper, it’s Guadeloupe’s only official clothing-optional beach near Saint Barthelemy: beautiful water, white sand, easy access, and real Caribbean light. If you arrive very early, especially as a couple, you may briefly experience what it’s supposed to be; quiet, freeing, and genuinely lovely.
But the reality most visitors report is uncomfortable. This beach has a well-known reputation for persistent voyeurism and predatory behavior, largely from solo men who linger, stare, follow, and turn nudity into a spectacle rather than a shared agreement.
The small size of the cove magnifies this problem: there’s nowhere to disappear, and the constant foot traffic can feel like being on display. Litter and discarded objects reinforce the sense that naturism here is often misused rather than respected.
Insider Tip
Arrive early morning (before 9:00) for the best chance at a quiet, respectful environment. Stay in visible public areas, avoid secluded edges or behind vegetation.
Who's Here
Primarily naturists, though the visitor mix heavily leans toward solo male locals. Couples and occasional female visitors, but many express discomfort due to unsolicited observation or advances.
Beach Surface
Soft white sand with shaded patches. Small lagoon formation helps create calm water pockets for swimming. Some rocky sections in shallow water.
Access Difficulty
Easy to moderate: Park at Chez Man Michel restaurant, then take the path to the left of the building down to the beach. Trail is short (a few minutes) and partially shaded.
