The Good

  • Wide, open, and beautifully quiet: Port Alfred Beach offers long stretches of white sand and rolling dunes that feel open and uncrowded, especially compared to nearby Kelly’s Beach.
  • Great for surfing, swimming, and fishing: East Beach is well known for surfing, while other sections are ideal for relaxed swimming and shore fishing when conditions are calm.
  • Strong safety presence: Lifeguards are on duty and regularly patrol the beach on quad bikes, which adds a reassuring sense of safety for families and swimmers.
  • Scenic dunes and walking routes: Walking left from East Beach leads you into magnificent sand dunes, perfect for exploring and long, peaceful beach walks.
  • Pet-friendly atmosphere: Dogs are welcome on leash, making it a lovely spot for morning or late-afternoon walks with pets.
  • Food and coffee nearby: A small food vendor is sometimes present on the beach, and nearby cafés, including Ocean Bliss Café, offer excellent coffee and meals close to the parking area near the river.

The Bad

  • Very hot sand during midday: The sand can be brutal on bare feet during peak heat. Early mornings or late afternoons are much more comfortable.
  • Strong currents and marine life: Rip currents can be dangerous, and blue bottle jellyfish are sometimes present, especially after windy conditions.
  • Poorly maintained bathrooms: The public ablution facilities are frequently reported as dirty and poorly maintained, which can be disappointing.
  • Can feel busy on peak days: While generally quieter than other local beaches, sunny weekends and holidays do attract larger crowds.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Port Alfred Beach is a classic South African town beach done well: wide, clean, and functional. It’s not flashy, but it’s dependable. You come here for long walks, decent surf, safe swimming zones, and space to breathe; not for secrecy or alternative lifestyles.

This is not a common nudist beach in South Africa. Even though it’s long and open, you will only find people stripping off in remote sections. What makes it appealing is balance: enough facilities to be comfortable, enough space to avoid crowds, and enough safety presence to relax. On hot days it can feel intense, and currents demand respect, but overall it’s one of the more enjoyable, low-stress beaches in the Eastern Cape.

Insider Tip

Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid extreme heat and enjoy calmer conditions. Always check the water for blue bottles before swimming.
