The Good
- Airport end quiet zone: The stretch closer to the airport is noticeably less crowded than the central sections. This is also where the naturist-friendly area tends to form, away from the organized hotel fronts. It gives you space without feeling completely isolated.
- Plane spotting swims: Few beaches let you float in clear water while planes pass low overhead. It adds a strange but memorable rhythm to the day. The traffic is not constant, so it feels more like a highlight than a disturbance.
- Pebble to sand seabed: Entry starts with small pebbles but quickly becomes sandy underfoot. This keeps the water crystal clear while still being comfortable once you are in. You can swim without worrying about sharp footing.
- Mixed beach setups: You can choose between paid loungers, free sections, or spots where beds are included with a drink. Some areas have thick cushioned sunbeds and attentive service. Others remain completely open if you want simplicity.
- Walkable access from Pythagorion: Around twenty minutes on foot from town makes this one of the easiest beaches to reach. No planning needed, you can just head over whenever the weather looks good. It works even for a quick half day.
- Shallow clear water: The sea slopes gently, making it comfortable for longer swims or just standing and cooling off. It feels safe but still open enough for proper swimming. The clarity stays consistent even in busier periods.
The Bad
- Jet ski disturbance: The biggest interruption tends to come from jet skis rather than planes. They cut across the calm and can feel out of place in quieter sections.
- Windy sand blasts: On windy days, sand lifts and hits your skin, especially near the shoreline. It can get uncomfortable enough to move or leave.
- Clashing music zones: Different beach bars play completely different styles at the same time. The overlap can feel chaotic instead of lively.
- Limited nearby shops: There are only a handful of places to buy essentials along the beach. You may need to return to town for anything specific.
- Sunbed inconsistency: Some sections offer free loungers with a purchase, while others charge separately. It is not always clear until you sit down.
The Naked Truth
Potokaki is a long beach, and the atmosphere changes quite a bit depending on where you are.
The central section is the busiest, with sunbeds, music and beach facilities. If you’re looking for the naturist area, keep walking toward the airport end where the crowds thin out and the beach becomes much quieter.
Naturists tend to gather toward the far end, where there’s more space and less foot traffic. It’s not a secluded cove or an official nude beach, so expect a mixed setting rather than everyone being naked.
One thing you’ll definitely notice is the airport. Planes pass fairly close overhead from time to time, which is either a fun novelty or a bit distracting depending on what you’re after.
Overall, Potokaki is a good option if you want an easy-to-reach beach with facilities nearby, but still want enough space to strip off away from the busiest section.
There are plenty of nude beaches in Samos, but Potokaki is one of the easier options if you want convenience as well as a quieter naturist section.
Insider Tip
Head toward the airport side if you want space and a more relaxed crowd, especially earlier in the day before the wind picks up. Bring some cash for sunbeds or drinks, but check ATM fees carefully in town before withdrawing. A light cover, water, and sunglasses go a long way here, especially when the wind starts to rise.
Who's Here
A mix of laid back travelers, couples from nearby resorts, and those who wander further down for a quieter, more open stretch.
Beach Surface
Underfoot starts with small pebbles at the shoreline, then quickly softens into sand once you step into the water.
Access Difficulty
Very easy to reach since it sits just outside Pythagorion and connects directly by road and a simple coastal walk.
