Nudity Policy

OPTIONAL

Nudity is optional but expected

The Good

  • Official naturist site: Prior Lake is one of the few officially designated clothing-optional beaches in Canada (recognized by the Capital Regional District). Nudity is not just accepted; it’s expected and protected.
  • Calm and respectful vibe: The naturist community here is known for being friendly and welcoming. Most visitors follow etiquette closely, bringing towels, avoiding voyeurism, and maintaining a family-friendly tone.
  • Convenient location: Just 15 minutes from downtown Victoria, tucked behind the larger textile-friendly Thetis Lake. Easy for locals who want a naturist experience without traveling far.
  • Natural beauty: A small, tree-lined freshwater lake surrounded by forest and rock outcrops.
  • Afternoon sun: The lake gets strong late-day light, warming up the water and shoreline.

The Bad

  • Small space: The naturist area is limited, mainly centered around a dock and rocky shore. It can feel crowded on hot weekends.
  • Limited amenities: No restrooms, changing huts, or food stands; bring everything you need.
  • Weekend crowd mix: Afternoons can draw louder groups or occasional alcohol use, which may bother families seeking quiet.
  • Parking caution: The road is narrow and strictly enforced, cars blocking the gate or pavement risk towing.
  • Past incidents elsewhere: While Prior Lake’s community is mostly respectful, nearby unofficial nude spots (like Witty’s Lagoon) have had reports of inappropriate behavior. Prior Lake itself remains comparatively well-behaved.
Naked Truth

The Naked Truth

Prior Lake is Vancouver Island’s official naturist retreat, set in a small, shaded basin behind Thetis Lake Park. It’s beloved for its calm water, inclusive community, and forested privacy.

While the site lacks facilities, it delivers what naturists value most; freedom, respect, and nature. It’s family-tolerant in the mornings and livelier later in the day, making timing key depending on the experience you want.

The vibe is more peaceful sanctuary than party beach, though you’ll want to bring your own supplies and stay alert for space on busy afternoons. Prior Lake is a well known and loved Vancouver Island nude beach... it is worth the detour if you are looking for a naturist beach in British Columbia.

Insider Tip

Arrive before noon for calmer crowds and easier parking. Always bring a towel to sit on and avoid the rocky lookout above the dock, which is off-limits due to past voyeurism concerns.

Who's Here

Local naturists, regulars from Victoria, couples, and families in the morning; generally respectful and friendly.

Beach Surface

Grassy shoreline, rocky edges, and a small dock for sunbathing and swimming.

Access Difficulty

Moderate: short unpaved trail (not wheelchair accessible), limited signage.
