The Good
- Hidden natural wonder: Qarraba Bay, tucked between Riviera and Golden Bay on Malta’s northwest coast, is one of the island’s most breathtaking and peaceful beaches. Surrounded by sculpted clay cliffs and turquoise waters, it feels like a world away from Malta’s busier seaside spots.
- Crystal-clear water: The bay’s shallow entry and calm, transparent sea make it excellent for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding. The sand is soft and golden-brown, with a smooth seabed that’s easy on bare feet.
- Seclusion and serenity: Thanks to its steep access path, few tourists venture down here, leaving it quiet and often uncrowded - even during summer. Many visitors report having the entire beach to themselves.
- Adventure appeal: The steep descent and clay hills make it a fun challenge for hikers and explorers. Kayakers can also reach Qarraba by sea and continue toward Ta’ Marija Cave or Fomm ir-Riħ.
The Bad
- Challenging access: Reaching the bay requires a steep and slippery descent from the hill separating it from Riviera Beach. The climb back up can be strenuous, especially under the midday sun.
- No facilities: There are no toilets, showers, lifeguards, or kiosks - only nature. You’ll need to pack everything you need, including water, food, and sun protection.
- Minimal shade: There are no trees or umbrellas, so staying long hours under the Maltese sun can be uncomfortable.
- Occasional litter: While recent visitors report cleaner conditions, some reviews still mention plastic debris washing ashore after storms.
The Naked Truth
Qarraba Bay is Malta at its most raw and rewarding. It’s a place for those who prefer silence to umbrellas, and scenery to service. The cliffs and blue-green waters create an almost cinematic view, perfect for photography, swimming, or simply sitting still. The descent is not for everyone; but those who make the effort are rewarded with one of the island’s most peaceful and visually striking beaches.
It’s also quietly known as a naturist-friendly spot in Malta, especially in the far corners, where privacy is easy to find. Qarraba’s untouched beauty makes it one of Malta must-see natural beaches. Locals regard it as one of the best naturist beaches in Europe.
Insider Tip
Wear shoes with grip for the descent, and bring extra water and sunscreen, there’s no shade. The best access point is the trail behind Riviera Bay, heading west over the ridge. Avoid the clay slopes after rain - they become dangerously slippery.
