The Good
- Unique scenery: Red Beach is famous for its warm reddish-brown sand, carved cliffs, and crystal-clear turquoise wate.
- Naturist-friendly: The beach has a relaxed, clothing-optional culture, with textile and nude sections naturally separated by rocks.
- Peaceful vibe: Away from Matala’s crowds, it feels quiet and free, especially early in the day.
- Local flavor: Simple beach bars serve drinks including the strong local mojitos that have become a bit of a legend.
- Rewarding hike: The 25–40 minute walk from Matala through rocky hills offers stunning sea views and a sense of adventure.
The Bad
- Challenging access: The trail is rocky and steep in parts; sturdy shoes are a must. It’s not ideal for small children or anyone with mobility issues.
- Few amenities: There are no restrooms, limited shade, and just a couple of informal bars. Bring water, food, and sunscreen.
- Wind exposure: The area can get strong winds, which may stir up sand or make swimming rough.
- Mixed reports on cleanliness: Some visitors mention trash or abandoned deckchairs during peak season.
- Crowds in summer: Despite the hike, it can get busy in August, especially near the bar areas.
The Naked Truth
Red Beach is one of most distinctive naturist spots in Crete - not for comfort, but for atmosphere. It feels wild and unpolished, with ochre-colored sand, blue-green water, and goats wandering the cliffs. The vibe is casual and friendly, and it’s easy to find your spot, whether you prefer swimwear or none at all.
It’s a beach for people who enjoy a bit of effort: the hike in, the minimal setup, the homemade drinks. There’s no luxury here; just a simple, free-spirited space with a spectacular backdrop.
Visit early or late for a calmer experience, and come prepared to carry what you need.
Insider Tip
Wear non-slip shoes for the trail, bring plenty of water, and avoid windy days if possible. The right-hand side (facing the sea) is where naturists usually gather.

Getting There
Reaching Red Beach (Kokkini Ammos) is a bit of an adventure - but that’s part of the fun. Hidden behind the cliffs just south of Matala, this beach rewards the effort with clear turquoise water and a famously laid-back vibe.
By Foot:
Park in Matala and follow the signed trail south toward Kokkini Ammos. The path climbs steeply over rocky hills, offering spectacular views of the bay before winding down to the red sand below. The hike takes about 15–20 minutes, so bring water and wear sturdy shoes - it can get hot and slippery in the midday sun.
By Boat:
In summer, you can skip the climb altogether and catch a small taxi boat from Matala’s main beach. The ride only takes a few minutes and drops you close to the shore for a small fee - a fun, breezy way to arrive if you’re traveling light.
