The Good
- Unreal water clarity: Secret Cove is famous for its crystal-clear, turquoise and emerald water. On calm days, you can see straight to the bottom, making it one of the most visually striking spots on Lake Tahoe.
- Direct waterfront access without deep lake driving: If you want stunning Lake Tahoe views without driving far into the basin, this cove delivers. You actually get down to the water rather than just viewing it from above.
- Peaceful and scenic setting: Surrounded by rocks and open shoreline, the cove feels intimate and calm, especially on weekday mornings or early in the day.
- Clothing optional but flexible: While Secret Cove is known as a nude beach, nudity is optional. Many visitors remain clothed, especially during cooler months, while others choose to sunbathe nude. Both are generally accepted.
- Short hike to paradise: Compared to other Tahoe hidden beaches, the hike is relatively manageable. Most visitors reach the water in about 10 to 20 minutes, making it accessible for those comfortable with light hiking.
The Bad
- Can get extremely crowded: Despite its “secret” reputation, the cove fills up quickly, especially on weekends, holidays, and summer mornings. Arriving late often means no beach space and no parking.
- Very limited sand: Water levels and seasons matter. In spring or high water periods, sandy space is minimal. Even in summer, much of the cove is rocky, with limited room for towels.
- Parking challenges: Parking is scarce and unofficial. Roadside spots fill up fast, and nearby state park parking often requires reservations far in advance.
- Steep return hike: While the hike down feels easy, the climb back up can be tiring, especially in heat. The incline can be rough for inexperienced hikers.
- Not kid-friendly: Due to nudity, rocky terrain, narrow beach space, and challenging access, this is not a good beach for children.
- Privacy concerns for some: Although clothing optional, some visitors report discomfort due to staring, photography despite posted rules, or mixed expectations around nudity.
The Naked Truth
Secret Cove earns its reputation for jaw-dropping water, but it is not a quiet secret anymore. On calm days, the clarity is unreal and swimming here feels special, but the combination of limited shoreline and growing popularity means the vibe can flip fast. Early mornings and weekdays feel relaxed, respectful, and genuinely clothing-optional. Late mornings, weekends, and holidays often feel crowded, cramped, and much less comfortable; especially if you came expecting solitude.
Nudity here is real but not protected or controlled. Most people are nude, many are not, and expectations don’t always align. If you’re confident, arrive early, and are okay sharing space in a mixed crowd, Secret Cove can be magical.
Insider Tip
Arrive early, ideally before 8 or 9 AM, to secure parking and beach space. If the main cove feels crowded, explore the surrounding rocks for more privacy and quieter swimming spots. Pack light and bring shoes suitable for rocks.
Who's Here
A mix of locals, hikers, paddleboarders, photographers, and sunbathers. Some nudists, many clothed visitors. The crowd varies by season and time of day, with fewer people on weekdays and early mornings.
Beach Surface
Mostly rocky with a small sandy area that changes depending on water levels. Smooth stones, large rocks, and clear shallow water dominate the shoreline. Great for swimming and floating, less ideal for lounging without a mat or towel.
Access Difficulty
Moderate: The hike is short but includes dirt trails, uneven footing, and a noticeable incline on the return. Suitable for reasonably fit visitors; not accessible for strollers or those with mobility limitations.

Getting There
Secret Cove is located on the east shore of Lake Tahoe, on the Nevada side, south of Incline Village and just past Sand Harbor.
By Car: From Incline Village, drive south on NV-28 (Lakeshore Boulevard) along the lake. Pass Sand Harbor State Park and continue toward Chimney Beach. Watch carefully for small roadside pullouts on the lake side of the highway; parking is informal, extremely limited, and fills early. Secret Cove is not signed, not visible from the road, and easy to miss. Slow down once you pass Secret Harbor, as GPS often overshoots the correct area.
By Foot: From roadside parking, follow the well-worn dirt trails downhill toward the water. The hike takes about 10–20 minutes depending on where you park. Trails are uneven, rocky, and include some steps. The descent is easy; the climb back up is noticeably steeper, especially in heat.
By Public Transport: There is no public transportation to Secret Cove. Access requires a car followed by a hike.
