The Good
- Peaceful, secluded, and uncrowded: Secrets Beach truly lives up to its name. It is quiet, calm, and far removed from busy city beaches, making it perfect for switching off and slowing down.
- Stunning sunrise views: This is one of the best sunrise viewpoints along the coast. On clear mornings, you can even see the Cape Recife Lighthouse in the distance.
- Beautiful natural textures: The beach is a mix of rocks, pebbles, sand, shells, and tidal pools, which makes it ideal for beachcombing. Many visitors come specifically to collect shells and explore the shoreline.
- Sheltered from strong city winds: Compared to other beaches around Port Elizabeth, this spot is often partially protected from PE’s winds, making it more comfortable on breezy days.
- Clean water and relaxing rock pools: The water is generally clean, and the rock pools are perfect for cooling off, relaxing, or gentle dips rather than full swimming.
- Pet-friendly and relaxed vibe: Dogs are often seen enjoying walks here, and the overall atmosphere is calm and respectful.
The Bad
- Not ideal for swimming: This is not a classic swimming beach. The sea can be wild, wavy, and unpredictable, and much of the shoreline is rocky.
- No facilities at all: There are no toilets, benches, bins, or food options, so you must come fully prepared and take everything with you.
- Access requires care: From the parking area, access to the beach involves walking down either bush-covered paths or sandy and rocky trails, which can be slippery.
- Wind and waves can pick up: While often sheltered, conditions can change quickly, especially in summer months like November.
The Naked Truth
Secrets Beach is about silence and texture, not swimming or social beach time. It’s the kind of place you come to watch the ocean breathe, hunt for shells, sit on warm rocks, and leave feeling mentally reset. If you expect sand, umbrellas, or easy dips in the sea, you’ll be disappointed. If you want solitude, sunrise, and raw coastline, it delivers.
This is not a well known naturist beach in South Africa. Even though it’s quiet, the access points, dog walkers, and rocky layout make nudity impractical, but you will see people strip off here occasionally. Treat it like a coastal nature spot rather than a traditional naturist beach, and you’ll enjoy it much more.
Insider Tip
Come early in the morning for sunrise or later in the afternoon for the calmest atmosphere. Always keep an eye on the sea and avoid turning your back on waves near the rocks.
Who's Here
Mostly locals, couples, dog walkers, photographers, nature lovers, and people seeking solitude. Crowds are rare.
Beach Surface
A natural mix of rocks, pebbles, small sandy patches, shells, and tidal pools. Footwear is helpful for exploring comfortably.
Access Difficulty
